Taco Bell has been using voice AI to take drive-through orders in the United States since at least 2024, and the rollout is part of a broader Yum! Brands effort to apply AI and restaurant software across its operations. The word “latest” is best read as a headline, not a verified industry ranking: available company updates show several chains at different stages, but do not establish which adopted the technology most recently.
What Taco Bell has rolled out
On July 31, 2024, Yum! Brands said its voice-AI ordering system was active in more than 100 Taco Bell drive-throughs across 13 U.S. states. Yum! said it aimed to expand to hundreds of locations by the end of that year; that was a target, not confirmation that the target was met. Yum! Brands’ announcement described the program as the result of more than two years of fine-tuning and testing.
The system takes orders through the drive-through speaker, rather than simply advising an employee who enters the order. In the company’s account, the goal is to handle a routine part of ordering so team members can focus on hospitality and other tasks. Those are the intended benefits; the cited company announcement does not independently measure changes in staff workload or customer satisfaction.
How voice AI fits into Yum!’s wider technology strategy
Byte by Yum! is the operating-software umbrella
Yum! introduced Byte by Yum! in February 2025 as the umbrella for its proprietary software capabilities. The company describes the platform as spanning ordering, point of sale, kitchen and delivery optimization, menu management, inventory, labor, and team tools. Yum! reported that 25,000 of its restaurants used at least one Byte product at that time. That figure is platform adoption across Yum!, not the number of Taco Bell locations using voice AI. Yum!’s Byte announcement also cited 300 million annual digital transactions, a digital-transaction figure rather than a voice-AI order count.

The NVIDIA collaboration adds other AI applications
In March 2025, Yum! announced an AI collaboration with NVIDIA covering voice ordering, computer vision for drive-through and back-of-house operations, and restaurant analytics. Yum! said pilots had begun at select Taco Bell and Pizza Hut locations and planned to target 500 restaurants across its brands in the second quarter of 2025. The 500-restaurant figure was a forward-looking plan in the announcement, not a confirmed completion. Yum! described a corporate footprint of more than 61,000 restaurants in more than 155 countries and territories; that is the scale of the parent company, not AI deployment. Read Yum!’s NVIDIA announcement.
These systems address different parts of restaurant work. Voice AI handles the spoken ordering interaction; computer vision and analytics are intended to support operational visibility and decision-making. The announcement does not establish that every technology is active in every pilot restaurant, or that the broader AI plans were completed on schedule.

What the later deployment figure does—and does not—show
Omilia, a voice-AI vendor, says its solution was deployed in more than 890 Taco Bell U.S. stores as of April 2026. Omilia also claims order-to-food time was on par with or better than human ordering. Those are vendor-reported figures and performance claims; the cited case study does not provide independent validation or detailed methodology for that comparison. Omilia’s Taco Bell case study should therefore be read as evidence of the vendor’s account of deployment, not as an independently audited result.
The 2024 Yum! figure and 2026 Omilia figure come from different sources and dates. They show a reported expansion over time, but they are not a like-for-like performance study, and the supplied figures do not establish how many orders the system handles or how it performs at each store.

How Taco Bell compares with other restaurant AI efforts
Voice-ordering programs are not at one common stage. Wendy’s says its FreshAI system moved from a two-state pilot in 2024 to nationwide operation and processes tens of thousands of orders daily. The company page excerpt reporting that volume does not expose a publication date, so the figure should not be treated as a current, independently verified count. Wendy’s FreshAI update presents the company’s own account.
Wendy’s has also described practical hurdles such as ambient noise, varied speech, menu complexity, and customization. Its system pairs voice AI with a visual order display, giving customers a way to see what the system captured. Those are useful criteria for judging any voice-ordering setup, but Wendy’s description does not prove that Taco Bell uses the same interface or has resolved the same issues. Wendy’s overview of AI for restaurant innovation discusses its approach.

McDonald’s, by contrast, ended its IBM AI drive-through test in 2024. The Associated Press reported that the test concluded after a trial at more than 100 restaurants. Ending that test is evidence of a different implementation outcome, not proof that all drive-through AI systems succeed or fail. Associated Press coverage of McDonald’s and IBM reports the decision.
| Company | What the cited update says | Evidence and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Taco Bell / Yum! | More than 100 U.S. drive-throughs across 13 states in July 2024; Omilia later reported more than 890 U.S. stores in April 2026. | The earlier figure is from Yum!; the later deployment and performance claims are from vendor Omilia. They are not independent performance measurements. |
| Wendy’s | FreshAI expanded from a two-state pilot in 2024 to what Wendy’s describes as nationwide operation, with tens of thousands of orders daily. | Company-reported update; the publication date for the daily volume is not established in the cited page result. |
| McDonald’s / IBM | McDonald’s ended its IBM AI drive-through test in 2024. | Reported by the Associated Press; the end of one test does not settle the performance of other systems. |
In 2026, QSR Magazine described Taco Bell’s technology effort as connecting drive-through ordering with loyalty, labor, inventory, and broader operations through Byte by Yum!. Taco Bell Chief Digital and Technology Officer Dane Mathews said the parent company’s technology investment gave the brand an advantage. That is an executive’s perspective, not independent evidence that the strategy has improved a particular metric. QSR Magazine’s 2026 QSR Drive-Thru Report provides that context.
What customers and operators should look for
A deployment count alone cannot tell a customer whether voice AI is easy to use, or an operator whether it improves service. A useful evaluation asks whether the system handles the entire order or only assists staff, and whether customers can review and correct the order before it is submitted.
- Speech in real conditions: How well does it handle background noise, different speaking styles, and customers who change their minds?
- Menu and customization: Can it reliably capture substitutions, modifiers, and less-common combinations?
- Order visibility: Is the recognized order displayed clearly, and can a customer or employee correct errors before checkout?
- Measured outcomes: Are accuracy, service time, satisfaction, and staff workload measured against a comparable human-ordering baseline?
The cited company and vendor updates do not provide a harmonized, independent comparison on those measures for Taco Bell, Wendy’s, and McDonald’s. As a result, deployment claims should not be mistaken for proof that AI ordering is more accurate, faster, or more satisfying in every setting.
