In developer Maxim Saplin’s 2026 LLM Chess evaluation, TypeSafe’s Jev placed 59th with an Elo of 242.9±117.5 across 80 games, between qwen3.6-27b@q4_k_s and o4-mini-medium in that leaderboard snapshot. Saplin reports low token use, cost, and time per game, but this was one outside evaluation using a constrained legal-move interface—not evidence that Jev is a general-purpose reasoning model or that the result has been independently reproduced.
What Jev is, and what “played chess” means here
Saplin describes Jev as a typed-decision model rather than a conventional chat model. Its questions can ask it to choose a label, assign a score, or answer a yes/no question, with probabilities returned alongside the answer. For chess, the evaluation used Jev’s Choice format: select one move from a supplied set of legal options.
That setup differs from the usual agentic LLM Chess interaction Saplin describes: the program asks for the current board, asks for legal moves, and then accepts a move command. Instead, each Jev turn received a board position and was asked to choose among legal moves. The integration passed its selected move to the same move-making action used by the evaluation runner.
How the chess prompt was constrained
For each ply—the move by one side—the harness supplied { fen, side_to_move } and one Choice question. The options were legal moves encoded in UCI notation. The criteria text included the corresponding SAN notation, and the question allowed up to 255 options. Jev returned a UCI string.

Because the choices came from the legal-move list, the interface could keep Jev’s selection within that list when the choice mechanism enforced the supplied options. That is a protocol constraint, not a guarantee of chess understanding, strategic strength, or generally correct output in other tasks. Saplin reports that Jev completed 100% of game duration in this run, which he treats as perfect protocol following.

The figures below are from Saplin’s leaderboard snapshot, not an independently reproduced benchmark. Elo is accompanied by an uncertainty figure, and the entries used different numbers of games; they are not controlled head-to-head results.

The neighboring ranks make the headline comparison understandable: Jev’s reported Elo sits close to these entries in that snapshot. The uncertainty values are substantial, especially for Jev and qwen3.6-27b@q4_k_s, and the game counts vary from 27 to 199. Rank and Elo should therefore be read as results of this particular snapshot and setup, not a stable ordering of reasoning ability. Saplin’s use of Elo as a proxy for reasoning is his interpretation; Elo here measures chess performance in the evaluation.
The table’s per-game figures are reported by Saplin for Jev. They are useful as a record of this run, but without equivalent figures for the two neighboring entries they do not establish a comparative efficiency advantage over those models.

What happened against Dragon
Saplin also reports ten games against Dragon at each of levels L1, L2, and L3. At every level, Dragon won five games, five were draws, and Jev won none. These small matchups show that the leaderboard placement did not mean Jev was beating this opponent in the reported sample.
Why the interface may matter more than the headline
Saplin’s central explanation is about fit: selecting from a finite list of valid actions worked better for Jev than generating English one character at a time. In a small demonstration of character-by-character generation, he shows outputs such as bue and helhoh. He summarizes the point: “A fixed list of legal chess moves fits this model much better than spelling English letter by letter.”

That distinction matters when interpreting the result. Jev was not asked to freely narrate a chess plan and produce an unconstrained move; it was asked to select among legal candidates. The design is a practical way to use a typed-choice model for a task with a bounded action set. It does not show that typed decisions will outperform chat models across other benchmarks or that the Elo result transfers beyond this chess harness.

- It establishes, as Saplin reports it: Jev was integrated into LLM Chess through legal-move choices and appeared at rank 59 with Elo 242.9±117.5 over 80 games in his snapshot.
- It suggests: a finite set of valid choices may suit Jev better than open-ended character generation for this kind of task.
- It does not establish: general-purpose reasoning capability, a directly controlled comparison with the neighboring entries, or independent reproducibility. Saplin calls it “one outside eval.”
Saplin’s article, posted 17 September and edited 21 September 2026, is the primary account of the method and figures: DEV Community article by Maxim Saplin. Saplin also states a Jev price of $0.042 per 1 million input tokens, with output free. That is a dated claim in his article, not a verified current API price; it should not be treated as current pricing without checking the provider.
