Seeing “Person 1” in Chrome does not, by itself, mean your profile was deleted, hacked, or affected by a current bug. It may simply be a default profile label. A Chrome 79-era rename issue was reported in December 2019, but there is no official confirmation in the available sources that the same problem is widespread in current Chrome. First check which profile contains your data; rename it only after you identify it.

What “Person 1” tells you—and what it doesn’t

A profile’s name is only a label. It cannot tell you whether that profile still contains the bookmarks, history, passwords, extensions, or settings you expect. Chromium’s current profile-management code can generate numbered default names and handle duplicate default names, so “Person 1” can appear as a normal label. That behavior does not explain why a particular profile changed its name. Chromium profile manager source

The label alone is also not evidence that someone accessed your account. Check the profile’s contents and account association before drawing conclusions or making changes.

Was there a Chrome bug that renamed secondary profiles?

Secondary reports describe some existing secondary profiles being renamed to labels such as “Person 1” or “Person 2” during the Chrome 79 rollout in December 2019. Those reports discussed the experimental Profile Menu Revamp flag as a suspected trigger at the time. A 2019 Chromium commit also documents migration of default profile names and handling of duplicates. These are historical accounts; they do not confirm a widespread current recurrence. There is no official current incident notice or version-specific fix in the sources confirming a renewed “Person 1” rename issue. The old flag and workaround discussed in 2019 should not be treated as a current fix, and the historical reports cannot establish the cause of a change on an individual computer.

How to identify the profile with your data

  1. Open Chrome’s profile manager and review the available profiles. Do not select Delete while identifying them.
  2. Open each plausible profile and check for the bookmarks, extensions, history, settings, and account association you recognize. A name alone is not a reliable identifier.
  3. If expected data seems absent, check the other profiles and any available account-backed copies or backups. A changed label does not prove that data was deleted, and signing in cannot be promised to recover information stored only locally.

Why deleting a profile is not a troubleshooting step

Google warns that removing a Chrome profile erases its bookmarks, history, passwords, and other settings from that computer. Do not delete a profile just because its name changed or its data is not immediately visible. Treat removal as a deliberate final action, after you have identified the profile and considered what local information it contains. Google Chrome Help
