The right fit depends on whether you need to expose existing APIs as MCP tools, route and govern MCP traffic, protect server access, or catalog AI assets. This is a capability-based shortlist—not a hands-on ranking or a claim that these are objectively the five best products.
What an enterprise MCP gateway needs to do
“MCP gateway” can describe several related but distinct jobs: routing requests to MCP servers, generating MCP-compatible tools from APIs, enforcing identity and access policies, and cataloging servers or other AI assets. A product that addresses one job should not be assumed to provide the others. Start by identifying the job your architecture needs, then compare products against it.
The options below are organized by fit. The cited materials are primarily vendor documentation; they do not establish comparative performance, pricing, or an objective ranking.
| Option | Best fit to evaluate | Key boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Kong AI Gateway / MCP Gateway | API teams exposing gateway-managed APIs as MCP tools and applying gateway policies | Enterprise product guidance; the Konnect MCP Registry is identified as a tech preview |
| AWS MCP Gateway and Registry | Teams considering an open-source gateway alongside an AI asset registry | The gateway is optional; the registry can be used with an existing ingress and policy layer |
| Cloudflare Access for MCP servers | Organizations extending Cloudflare Zero Trust access controls to MCP endpoints | The cited documentation covers access protection, not a full API-management gateway or asset registry |
| Microsoft Foundry AI gateway with Azure API Management | Microsoft-stack teams evaluating governance for MCP tools | The documented Foundry gateway features are preview and have stated scope limitations |
| IBM ContextForge | Teams investigating an open-source gateway candidate | The cited IBM-authored guide is architectural guidance, not current product-feature or release evidence |

AWS describes production deployment paths using EKS with Helm or ECS Fargate with Terraform, including multi-AZ high availability and autoscaling. Those are AWS-published project capabilities, not independent deployment benchmarks. The gateway is optional: a team with its own ingress and policy layer can use the registry without sending traffic through this gateway. Assess operational ownership, data-store requirements, and integration details in the AWS Open Source Blog’s project overview, published June 17, 2026.
Cloudflare Access: securing MCP server access
Cloudflare documents using Access to secure MCP servers in two situations: customer-managed third-party server code hosted on a hostname the customer controls, and SaaS-managed servers that accept customer-provided OAuth or OIDC identity settings. That makes Access worth evaluating when the central requirement is to apply Cloudflare Zero Trust controls to MCP endpoint access.

Microsoft 365 administration documentation also describes preview discovery and governance for MCP servers registered in a connected AI Gateway or Azure API Management instance, and lists LiteLLM gateway connectivity. Discovery is limited to servers registered in a connected gateway. Because these capabilities are evolving, check current regional availability, support terms, and limitations before making a production decision. See the Microsoft 365 Tools Gateway documentation, updated September 29, 2026.
IBM ContextForge: an open-source candidate to verify
IBM ContextForge belongs on an evaluation list for teams looking for an open-source gateway, but the available cited material is not enough to make specific current claims about its features or deployment. An IBM-authored enterprise MCP architecture guide from October 2025, verified by Anthropic, recommends an enterprise gateway pattern for centralized security, control, scale, governance, and auditing. It is architectural guidance, not a current ContextForge feature matrix or a comparison against the other options. Check current official project documentation for release status, deployment modes, security controls, and support model before relying on product-specific assumptions. Read the IBM-authored guide.

How to compare enterprise MCP gateways
Use the same requirements and test cases for each candidate. The following checks help prevent a catalog, access layer, or API-to-MCP feature from being mistaken for a complete gateway solution.
- Define the gateway role. Decide whether you need to route existing MCP servers, generate MCP tools from APIs, secure access to servers, catalog AI assets, or combine some of these functions. Verify each role in the product and edition you would actually deploy.
- Trace identity to authorization. Check identity-provider integration, OAuth and OIDC behavior, delegated identity requirements, and whether authorization is enforced at individual tool invocation—not just at initial connection.
- Specify audit and observability needs. Ask which user or agent, tool, request attributes, latency, errors, and payload details are recorded. Confirm export to your existing telemetry stack and whether its retention behavior meets policy. Do not assume “logs” means detailed tool traces.
- Match deployment and ownership to your operations. Compare self-hosted, hybrid, cloud, and edge arrangements; who patches and scales each component; required data stores; and how secrets and upstream credentials are handled.
- Separate released features from previews and guidance. Treat Microsoft’s documented gateway features as preview, Kong’s MCP Registry as tech preview, and the IBM guide as dated architecture guidance rather than current product-release evidence.
- Check ecosystem fit. Prioritize compatibility with your current API gateway, cloud, identity provider, network controls, asset catalog, and observability backend. Replacing a working ingress or policy layer may add operational work without meeting a requirement you actually have.
- Request current commercial and service terms. Obtain edition and pricing details, support commitments, data-handling terms, regional availability, and service-level commitments directly from each provider. These terms are not established by the cited materials.
A practical way to narrow the shortlist
- Write the primary use case in one sentence. For example: “Expose selected APIs as MCP tools with existing gateway policies” points toward evaluating Kong; “catalog assets but keep our own ingress” makes the AWS registry’s optional-gateway design relevant; “apply our existing Cloudflare access controls” points toward Cloudflare Access.
- Map each required control to a product capability. Record the exact behavior needed for authentication, per-tool authorization, routing, audit, telemetry, and discovery. Mark capabilities that are only documented for a preview, tech preview, or a specific deployment.
- Validate a representative workflow. In a pilot, trace a request from identity through authorization to tool invocation and audit export. Include denied access, expired credentials, an upstream failure, and a policy change so the team can see how each system behaves outside the happy path.
- Review production obligations before adoption. Confirm who owns upgrades, scaling, backups, incident response, and support; verify regional and contractual requirements; and review current vendor documentation because preview status and product capabilities can change.
There are no comparative load tests, cost benchmarks, or market-share figures in the cited materials, so they cannot support a performance ranking or a claim that one option scales better than another. Treat deployment tests and commercial validation as part of your own evaluation rather than inferring results from feature lists.
