For charging, connect one end of the USB-C-to-USB-C cable to your phone and the other to a compatible USB-C power adapter, then plug the adapter into a wall outlet. You can also connect the phone to a computer’s USB-C port to charge it and, if supported, transfer files. Exact charging speed and USB options depend on your phone, cable, and adapter.
Check that the cable fits your phone
A USB-C-to-USB-C cable has a USB-C plug at both ends, so it works directly only with a phone that has a USB-C port. Check your phone’s specifications or inspect its charging port. If it has a different connector, you need the matching cable or an appropriate adapter rather than plugging this cable directly into the phone. Apple describes the USB-C connector on supported iPhone models in its USB-C iPhone guide; Samsung also explains USB-C cable and adapter use for Galaxy phones and tablets in its Type-C support guide.
Charge your phone from a wall outlet
-
Check that your phone has a USB-C port and that both ends of the cable are USB-C.
-
Insert either end into the phone’s USB-C port. USB-C plugs are reversible.

The phone, cable, adapter, and charging protocol all affect the speed. A high-wattage adapter does not force a phone to charge at that wattage. Google’s Pixel charging guidance, for example, lists USB Power Delivery adapters rated at 15 W or more and PPS adapters rated at 30 W or more as recommendations for Pixel phones; the speed a particular Pixel accepts remains model-dependent. Do not apply those adapter recommendations to other brands. Samsung likewise notes that charging speed varies by charger and device in its Galaxy charging guidance.

Connect one end of the cable to the phone and the other to a computer’s USB-C port. Depending on the devices and port, this can charge the phone and support data transfer. A computer port may charge more slowly than a suitable wall adapter. Apple notes that computer and hub ports can charge more slowly, and that a multiport adapter’s output may be reduced when several devices are connected in its iPhone charge-speed guidance.
Some phones require you to select a USB mode before file transfer starts. On Galaxy devices, Samsung’s instructions are to tap the USB notification and select “Transferring files/Android Auto” for file transfer or “Charging phone only” to limit the connection to charging. Labels and menus can differ by model and software version. See Samsung’s Galaxy connection options for device-specific steps.

Understand what USB-C does—and does not—guarantee
USB-C describes the connector, not every capability of the cable. The USB Implementers Forum states, “USB Type-C® is not USB Power Delivery” and “USB Type-C® is not USB 3.2 or USB4®.” In other words, the connector alone does not establish charging power, data speed, or video support. Check the cable and device specifications for the features you need. The USB-IF’s USB Type-C and USB 2.0 Type-C cable and connector guidelines explain these distinctions.
For context, USB-IF’s March 20, 2023 guidance says USB 2.0 Type-C technology supports data operation up to 480 Mbps. A USB 2.0 Type-C-to-Type-C cable can support USB Power Delivery, but it does not provide USB 3.2, USB4, or Alt-Mode capability. By contrast, Apple says certain USB 3 cables can support data rates up to 10 Gbit/s with the specified iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro models. That is a model- and cable-specific capability, not a general speed for USB-C cables. See Apple’s USB-C iPhone guide for the applicable models and cable requirements.

Connecting two phones or another USB-C device
Do not assume that connecting two USB-C devices makes one charge the other or starts file transfer automatically. Which device supplies power, and which USB functions are available, depend on the devices and their settings. For Galaxy-specific connection options, including supported accessory connections, consult Samsung’s connection guide.

Charging is slower than expected
-
A computer port, hub, multiport charger, or lower-output or incompatible accessory may reduce speed.
-
Check the phone maker’s charging specifications; the adapter’s advertised rating alone does not say what speed your phone will accept.
The phone shows a liquid or debris warning, or the cable or port is hot
Disconnect the cable. If the phone is hot, allow it to cool; if it is wet, let it dry at room temperature. Do not insert an object into the port. If the warning returns, contact the phone manufacturer for support. Google provides these steps in its Pixel liquid or debris warning guidance.
File transfer does not start
Unlock the phone, then check its USB notification or connection settings and select a file-transfer mode if available. The connected devices must support the selected USB function; a charging-only mode will not transfer files. Galaxy menu instructions are in Samsung’s connection options guide.
