There is no publicly announced DOJ decision or court order requiring Google to break up. The public record instead shows remedies in two separate federal monopolization cases: a search case with a final judgment and ongoing compliance proceedings, and an ad-tech case in which the DOJ said it would review the court’s remedies opinion and consider next steps. Reports that the department is considering a breakup should not be mistaken for a filed divestiture request or an order to sell a business.
What “reportedly considering” means
A report about internal DOJ deliberations is not the same as an official agency position. In its September 16, 2026 announcement about the ad-tech case, the DOJ said it would review the court’s opinion and determine next steps. Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. said, “We will continue to review the opinion to consider the Department’s options.” That statement concerned the ad-tech opinion; it did not announce a plan to break up Google.
As of October 4, 2026, the public DOJ announcements and court records described here establish behavioral remedies in the two cases, not an order requiring Google to divest Chrome or another business. A breakup would require a separate formal step and, if contested, further legal proceedings. The record summarized here does not establish that the DOJ has taken that step.
Two cases, two markets, two sets of remedies
The search and ad-tech proceedings are distinct cases, brought in different courts and addressing different parts of Google’s business. Their remedies should not be conflated: the ad-tech court’s ruling is not a breakup order in the search case.

What the search case remedies do
The DOJ’s September 2, 2025 remedies announcement summarized measures intended to address the court’s finding of a Sherman Act Section 2 violation. They target how Google distributes search products and how rival search providers can access certain data and services; the announcement did not describe a required sale of Chrome or another Google business.
- Distribution agreements: The court barred certain exclusive distribution agreements involving Google Search, Chrome, Google Assistant, and the Gemini app.
- Data access: Google must make specified search index and user-interaction data available to rivals.
- Syndication: Google must provide search and search-text-ad syndication services.
The DOJ’s announcement is an agency summary. For the precise scope and conditions of these obligations, the December 5, 2025 final judgment and memorandum opinion on the DOJ case docket are the controlling records. The docket’s later compliance filings and orders show that implementation and oversight continued after judgment.

What the ad-tech case remedies do
The September 16, 2026 DOJ announcement describes behavioral requirements concerning Google’s publisher ad-server and ad-exchange products. They address how those products interact with competing tools and how publishers can access and use their data—not a transfer of ownership to a new company.
- Integrations between Google’s AdX and DFP products and Prebid.
- Real-time bidding access for other publisher ad servers.
- Publisher access to and export of their data.
- Restrictions on preferential bidding by AdWords.
- A monitor and technical committee to oversee compliance.
DOJ said the final judgment’s term is six years. The department’s stated plan to review the opinion and consider next steps pertains to this ad-tech ruling; it does not, by itself, establish a DOJ decision about divestiture in either case.

How to interpret the search-market statistic
In its September 2, 2025 search-remedies release, the DOJ said Google had accounted for “approximately 90 percent of all search queries in the United States” “for years.” That is the DOJ’s description of Google’s historical share in the search case, not a new measurement for 2026. It provides context for that case, but should not be treated as a statistic about the ad-tech market or as proof that a breakup has been ordered.

A claim that the DOJ is formally pursuing a breakup would need to be distinguished from continued work on behavioral remedies. The clearest public indicators would be an official DOJ announcement or a court filing seeking divestiture, followed by a court decision on any requested relief. The records described above show a final judgment and compliance process in search, and a DOJ review of the ad-tech opinion; they do not show a public divestiture request or a breakup order.
