Upgrade to AirPods 5 only if Apple’s stated noise-cancellation improvement or the newer case and resistance rating matter more to you than battery life. Apple says AirPods 5 provide up to 1.5x more Active Noise Cancellation than AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, but its published figures give AirPods 4 ANC the edge in listening time. That ANC multiple is a manufacturer test claim, not a guarantee of a noticeable difference for every listener.
AirPods 5 vs. AirPods 4 ANC: the key differences
Apple’s comparison favors AirPods 5 for its stated ANC performance and IP57 resistance rating. AirPods 4 ANC has the higher quoted battery life. The figures below are Apple-published specifications and test results, not an independent head-to-head review.

Does AirPods 5 have better noise cancellation?
Apple claims AirPods 5 deliver “up to 1.5x more Active Noise Cancellation” than AirPods 4 ANC, based on testing in accordance with IEC 60268-24. This is a comparison of ANC performance under Apple’s test method; it does not establish how large the difference will seem in everyday listening or for a particular wearer.

The available comparison does not provide an independent real-world measurement or establish which model sounds better, fits more comfortably, or blocks a specific noise better for you. Treat the 1.5x figure as Apple’s test claim rather than a promise of a particular subjective improvement.
Which model lasts longer between charges?
Apple lists up to 5 hours of listening with ANC enabled on AirPods 4 ANC, versus up to 4 hours on AirPods 5. With the case included, Apple lists up to 22 hours for AirPods 4 ANC and up to 20 hours for AirPods 5. Those are estimates; Apple says battery life varies with settings, environment, usage, and other factors.

The figures are not from a single controlled comparison. Apple’s AirPods 5 battery tests were conducted in July and August 2026 using preproduction units, an iPhone 18 Pro, prerelease software, a specified purchased AAC music playlist, and 50% volume. Its per-charge ANC test ran until the first AirPod stopped playback. Apple’s AirPods 4 ANC battery tests were conducted in July and August 2024 using preproduction earbuds, iPhone 16 Pro Max units, and prerelease software. The different test dates and setups mean the published numbers should not be treated as a same-session independent result.
What changes with the charging case and resistance?
AirPods 5’s Wireless Charging Case supports Apple Watch and Qi charging and has a speaker for Find My. AirPods 4 ANC also comes with a wireless charging case that supports Apple Watch and Qi-certified charging and includes a Find My speaker. These are case features, not evidence of better earbud sound or ANC. Apple says Find My functionality requires iOS 27 or later.

Apple lists IP57 for AirPods 5 and IP54 for AirPods 4 ANC. These ratings come from controlled laboratory tests; Apple notes that resistance is not permanent. Neither rating is a reason to submerge the earbuds, and Apple says not to charge them when wet.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you upgrade from AirPods 4 ANC to AirPods 5?
Consider AirPods 5 if
- You want to try Apple’s newer ANC design and accept that the stated improvement may not feel the same to every listener.
- The IP57 rating or AirPods 5 case features better match how you use or locate your earbuds.
- You have checked the current local price and the upgrade cost makes those differences worthwhile to you.
Keep AirPods 4 ANC if
- The ANC you have now is sufficient and a possible improvement is not a reason on its own to replace them.
- You value the longer battery figures Apple publishes for AirPods 4 ANC: up to 5 hours per charge and 22 hours with the case, with ANC enabled.
- You do not need the AirPods 5 resistance rating or its case differences.
There is no substantiated value winner without current prices, and Apple’s specifications alone cannot settle fit, comfort, or sound quality. If those are your deciding factors, try both models in person where possible and compare them under the conditions in which you actually listen.
