To disable the camera device in Windows 11, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras, select the camera, choose Disable, and confirm. In Windows 10, turn off camera access for apps under Settings > Privacy > Camera, or disable the camera device through Device Manager. These options have different scopes: app permissions restrict software access, while device disablement is broader.
Choose the kind of camera restriction you need
- Block apps from using the camera: Use Camera privacy settings. This is useful when you want Windows to manage app access without disabling the camera device.
- Disable the camera device: Use Windows 11’s Cameras settings or Device Manager. This is a broader device-level change.
- Physically cover the lens: Use a built-in shutter or a model-compatible cover if you want to obscure the lens. This does not disable the camera in Windows.
Disable a camera device in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras.
- Under Connected cameras, select the laptop camera.
- Select Disable, then confirm with Yes.
To turn it back on, return to the same Cameras page, select the camera under Disabled cameras, and choose Enable. Disabling or enabling cameras requires administrator access. Windows may warn that the action will affect multiple cameras, and some devices require a reboot. The page may not show every camera type; Microsoft gives infrared cameras used for Windows Hello Face as an example. Microsoft’s camera settings guidance describes the available controls and exceptions.
Restrict camera access in Windows 10 or Windows 11
Windows 10
Open Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera. Turn off device camera access to block app access broadly, or use the listed Microsoft Store app controls to make narrower choices.
Windows 11
Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. The controls include Camera access, Let apps access your camera, and permissions for listed Microsoft Store apps. For the distinctions between these settings, see Microsoft’s camera app-permissions guide.

Know what the app controls do not cover
Turning off Camera access for apps does not necessarily prevent Windows Hello Face from using the camera to sign in. Microsoft says Hello can still sign in with Camera access off; turning off Windows Hello prevents that access. Microsoft’s camera permissions guidance also distinguishes Microsoft Store apps from desktop apps: desktop apps such as browsers and conferencing programs use a shared desktop-app camera setting and cannot be individually toggled there. Some may not appear in the list.
Disable the camera in Device Manager
- Open Start, search for Device Manager, and open it.
- Expand Cameras.
- Right-click the laptop camera and choose the enable or disable action shown.
The action label indicates the current state: if Disable device is available, the camera is enabled; if it is already disabled, the available action is Enable device. Device names and exact labels can vary. This route is documented in Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting guidance.

Check hardware switches, shutters, and camera indicators
Some laptops have a camera button, function-key shortcut, side switch, or built-in lens shutter. The controls depend on the laptop model, so check its markings and instructions. A shutter blocks the lens but does not disable the device in Windows. If you use a separate privacy cover, check bezel clearance and thickness, and confirm whether an infrared camera is positioned separately; fit is not universal. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance discusses hardware controls.
On devices with a camera light, Microsoft says the light turns on while the camera is active. If the device has no light, Windows displays a notification when the camera turns on or off. See Microsoft’s camera permissions guide.

Troubleshoot a camera that will not disable or re-enable
- The setting is locked or unavailable: You may need an administrator account. Some camera-access settings can only be changed by an administrator.
- The camera is missing from Windows 11 Cameras settings: Not every camera type appears there. Check Device Manager or the laptop’s hardware controls; an infrared camera used for Hello Face may not be listed on the Cameras page.
- The camera is not detected: Check for a physical switch or function-key control, then inspect Device Manager to see whether the device is already disabled.
- You disabled it but an app still signs in with your face: Camera app-access settings may not stop Windows Hello Face. Turn off Windows Hello if you need to prevent its camera access.
Windows 10 support ended in 2025
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The PC continues to work, and Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. Details are on Microsoft’s camera permissions page.
