For most people choosing a system specifically to play Nintendo DS games, a Nintendo 3DS-family handheld is the more flexible option. Nintendo says almost all DS games work on 3DS-family systems, and those systems also play 3DS game cards. But DS games run in 2D, some titles or accessories are exceptions, and the default display is expanded rather than the DS game’s original resolution. If you already own a DS, or a particular game depends on its hardware, the original system may still be the better fit.
Can I play Nintendo DS games on my Nintendo 3DS?
Yes. Nintendo of America says all DS games are compatible with 3DS-family systems except a few that require the DS’s AGB slot, also known as the Game Boy Advance Game Pak slot. Nintendo UK describes compatibility as applying to “most” DS games and likewise identifies GBA-slot accessories as exceptions. Check the manual for the specific game if it uses a peripheral or accessory. Nintendo of America’s compatibility guidance and Nintendo UK’s guidance explain the limits.

Compatibility primarily goes one way: DS game cards can play on 3DS-family systems, but 3DS game cards require a 3DS-family system and will not run on a DS, DS Lite, DSi, or DSi XL. That makes a 3DS-family handheld the more versatile choice if you may also want to play 3DS software. Nintendo’s support page on 3DS game cards states that they can only be played on 3DS-family systems.
What is the difference between playing DS games on a DS and a 3DS?
| Consideration | Original DS-family system | 3DS-family system |
|---|---|---|
| DS game compatibility | Plays DS games; compatibility depends on the title and system. | Plays most DS games; titles requiring the DS AGB/GBA slot are exceptions, according to Nintendo support. |
| 3DS game cards | Cannot play 3DS game cards. | Can play 3DS game cards. |
| DS game image | Displays DS software at its intended DS resolution. | Expanded by default; Nintendo says holding START or SELECT while launching loads the game at original resolution. |
| 3D effect for DS games | Not applicable to DS hardware. | DS games remain 2D. |
| DS/DSi software system features | Features depend on the DS model and title. | HOME Menu, StreetPass, and SpotPass are unavailable while DS/DSi software is running, according to Nintendo. |
The compatibility and system-feature details in the 3DS column come from Nintendo of America; the original-resolution launch method is documented in the Nintendo 3DS Operations Manual (UK).

How do DS games look on a 3DS?
DS games do not gain stereoscopic 3D graphics on a 3DS. Nintendo says they run in 2D. By default, the 3DS expands the lower-resolution DS image to fit its display, which can look less sharp than the game at its native resolution.
Load a DS game at its original resolution
- Insert the DS game card and select its icon from the 3DS HOME Menu.
- Hold either START or SELECT while starting the game.
- Keep the button held as the game launches to load it at original resolution.
This changes the image presentation; it does not add 3D or change the game itself. Nintendo documents the shortcut in its UK operations manual.

Which DS games or accessories may not work on a 3DS?
The key hardware exception is software that needs an accessory inserted into the original DS’s AGB/GBA slot. Nintendo says 3DS-family systems cannot use features or accessories that access the DS’s Slot 2. If a game’s experience depends on such an accessory, verify the manual and compatibility for that exact title before choosing a system.
There is also a regional qualification for DSi games: Nintendo UK notes that some DSi games bought outside the PAL region may not play on a PAL-region 3DS. This is not a blanket warning that all DS games are region-limited; check the title and region if buying a DSi game from another market. Nintendo UK’s compatibility guidance describes this caveat.

Can you still play DS games online or locally?
Do not buy a DS or 3DS expecting Nintendo’s original internet service for DS/DSi games to work: Nintendo says Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection has been discontinued. Nintendo’s support information also documents legacy DS game-card wireless security requirements (WEP or no security) and 802.11b or 802.11b/g network compatibility for certain online features. Those restrictions are not a reason to weaken a modern Wi-Fi network. Nintendo’s wireless security guidance and its page on network compatibility explain the legacy requirements.
Local wireless multiplayer is different from internet play and may still work when the game and systems support it. Modes and cross-system compatibility vary by title and software family: Nintendo’s Download Play overview, for example, says 3DS games connect only between 3DS-family systems, while DSiWare/DSi games connect only between DSi systems. Consult the individual game’s manual for its multiplayer modes and supported systems. Nintendo’s Download Play overview describes the limits.

When should you choose a DS instead?
A DS-family handheld can be the more suitable pick if your priority is the original DS display presentation, or if a specific game relies on an accessory that uses the DS’s GBA slot. It may also make sense if you already own a working DS and do not need 3DS games. For a used console, compare the actual unit’s condition, controls, screens, and battery rather than assuming every example is equivalent; current prices and condition vary, and no market comparison is established here.
When is a 3DS-family system the better choice?
Choose a 3DS-family system if you want broad DS-game compatibility plus access to 3DS game cards, and you are comfortable with DS games appearing in 2D with an expanded default image. The family includes systems such as the Nintendo 3DS XL and New Nintendo 2DS XL; confirm compatibility and condition for the exact model and game you intend to use.
