Yes—Nintendo 3DS and 2DS family systems play most Nintendo DS and DSi game cards. The main exception is software that requires the DS’s Game Boy Advance (AGB) slot or an accessory inserted into it. DS and DSi games run in 2D on these systems; they do not gain stereoscopic 3D.
Which DS games work on a 3DS or 2DS?
Nintendo’s general guidance is that most DS and DSi games work on 3DS-family systems. Nintendo Americas describes all DS games as compatible except a few that require the AGB slot, while Nintendo UK says you can play most DS games on a 3DS. Nintendo’s UK 2DS product page says almost all existing DS and DSi games can be played on a 2DS. These are qualitative descriptions, not a guarantee for every cartridge or a published compatibility percentage. This compatibility works in one direction: DS and DSi cards can be used on compatible 3DS-family systems, but a 3DS game card is a different format and cannot be played on DS-family-only systems. Nintendo’s 3DS Operations Manual.
Why some DS games or features do not work
Games and accessories that need the GBA slot
DS and DS Lite systems have a Game Boy Advance Game Pak slot, also called the AGB slot. 3DS and 2DS family systems do not. A DS title that requires a GBA-slot accessory will not work as intended on them. Nintendo’s examples for DSi compatibility include Guitar Hero On Tour and Guitar Hero Decades, which are unplayable on DSi; in other games, a feature that depends on a GBA cartridge may be unavailable. DS and DSi games do not use 3D
DS and DSi software displays in 2D even when played on a 3DS. Nintendo states, “Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games will not display in 3D.” The 3DS’s stereoscopic 3D slider does not change that. Nintendo Support.
Some 3DS features are unavailable while a DS game is running
In DS/DSi software mode, the HOME Menu, StreetPass, and SpotPass cannot be used. Nintendo also says wireless-enabled DS games can communicate with players using DS, DSi, DSi XL, or 3DS systems. That describes system compatibility for wireless play; it does not confirm that a particular game’s historic online service or servers are still available. How to display a DS game at its original resolution
DS and DSi titles are expanded by default on 3DS-family screens. To display a game at its original resolution, launch it while holding START or SELECT:
- Insert the DS or DSi game card and open its icon from the HOME Menu.
- Hold START or SELECT, then choose OPEN.
- Keep holding the button as the game starts to use the original-resolution display.
This changes the display, not the game’s compatibility: it cannot make a GBA-slot-dependent title or accessory work. Nintendo 3DS Operations Manual.

Check the game’s region before buying an import
Nintendo says 3DS-family systems are region locked. Its UK support guidance also cautions that some DSi games bought outside the PAL region may not play on a PAL 3DS. Do not assume this means every older DS card has the same region restrictions as a 3DS card: check the exact game’s format and region, and Nintendo’s guidance for the system and title involved. - Confirm the format: make sure it is a DS or DSi card, not a 3DS game card.
- Check for a GBA-slot requirement: look for instructions or features that require a GBA Game Pak or an accessory fitted into the DS/DS Lite slot.
- Check region and system: especially for DSi games imported from outside PAL, verify the exact card and console region.
- Separate display from compatibility: try the original-resolution launch option if the image looks different, but remember it does not repair a slot or region issue.
Nintendo’s published user guidance establishes which formats generally play and identifies these caveats; it does not describe the internal chipset, firmware mode, or execution method. It is therefore more accurate to describe the result than to claim that the system uses a particular emulation or hardware process.
