The right VPN for Firefox depends on what you need to protect: Mozilla’s built-in feature and VPN-company extensions can route Firefox traffic, while a full-device VPN app can cover other apps too. Firefox’s built-in option is free but limited to 50 GB per month and is rolling out gradually; paid services offer broader device protection, but an extension alone does not always provide it.
Does Firefox have a built-in VPN?
Yes. Mozilla’s built-in feature routes traffic originating in Firefox through a secure proxy and masks your IP address. It covers Firefox traffic, not other apps on your device. Mozilla says it is free, requires a Mozilla account, and includes 50 GB of data per calendar month. When you reach the limit, protection pauses until the next calendar month. See Mozilla Support’s Firefox VPN information for current eligibility and setup details.
Availability is being rolled out gradually, so check Firefox itself rather than assuming the feature is available in your region or account. Mozilla says the feature is unavailable in enterprise environments and is not being rolled out to users with enterprise policies. Mozilla announced the launch in March 2026 and, in an update dated May 19, 2026, said users in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, and Canada could choose among supported launch countries. Those dated rollout details do not guarantee availability to every user in those countries today. Mozilla explains the feature and its rollout in its Firefox VPN announcement.
The built-in feature is browser protection, not a substitute for HTTPS. Mozilla describes it as adding IP masking alongside HTTPS, which continues to encrypt the connection between your browser and an HTTPS website.

| Option | Traffic covered | Cost and limits | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox built-in VPN | Firefox traffic only | Free; 50 GB per month; requires a Mozilla account; availability depends on rollout and eligibility | Firefox browsing when the feature is available and a monthly cap is acceptable |
| VPN-company Firefox extension | Typically Firefox traffic; coverage and whether it pairs with a desktop app vary by provider | Varies by provider and plan; check account, plan, and app requirements | Browser-specific routing or controls, especially if you do not need every app covered |
| Full-device VPN app used with Firefox | Traffic from apps across the device, according to the service’s supported setup | Usually a paid subscription; check price, device limits, and terms | Protection beyond Firefox, such as for other browsers and internet-connected apps |

What are the best VPN services for Firefox?
Mozilla VPN: a full-device subscription with Firefox controls
Mozilla VPN is separate from Firefox’s free built-in feature. Mozilla describes it as a paid service that protects apps across the device with unlimited bandwidth. Its U.S. product page lists connections on up to five devices and more than 500 servers in 30+ countries. Mozilla also describes a Firefox extension for per-website VPN controls on Windows. These are Mozilla’s product claims, not independent test results. See Mozilla VPN’s product page and Mozilla VPN’s features page.

Proton VPN: an extension available to Free account holders
Proton VPN documents a Firefox extension that protects browser traffic. Its support documentation says the extension is available to Proton account holders, including Free accounts. That does not mean a free account includes every paid server, location, or feature. Check Proton’s current plan details before choosing it for a particular location or capability. Proton VPN’s Firefox extension guide explains the browser add-on; its plan support page describes plan differences.

Those are provider-reported, changeable figures—not evidence that one service is faster or better than another. Confirm the current details on Proton’s product page.
NordVPN: an extension plus a separate device app
NordVPN publishes documentation for a Firefox extension and a separate device app. The provider lists WebRTC protection and other extension features. An extension and an app serve different coverage needs: verify whether the extension alone meets yours or whether your setup requires the companion app for traffic outside Firefox. Review NordVPN’s Firefox extension information for current features and requirements.

ExpressVPN: browser proxy or app-paired coverage
ExpressVPN says its Firefox extension can work as a browser proxy or pair with its app for full-device encryption. Those modes are not equivalent: if you need other apps covered, check the app requirement for your operating system and setup. ExpressVPN lists server locations in 113 countries on its product page as of October 4, 2026; that provider-reported count may change and is not a performance measure. See ExpressVPN’s Firefox extension page for its current operating details.
Private Internet Access: extension for Firefox, app for other traffic
Private Internet Access (PIA) says its Firefox extension covers Firefox traffic, while its app protects other device traffic. The provider also describes router support, but a router is an optional, separate setup—not a requirement for using the Firefox extension. Consult PIA’s Firefox VPN information for current coverage and setup details.

How to compare Firefox VPN extensions
Before installing an extension or subscribing, check these points in the provider’s current documentation:
- Coverage: Does it route only Firefox traffic, or does it require or support a companion app for full-device coverage?
- Account and plan: Is a free account enough to use the extension, and which locations or controls are limited to paid plans?
- Operating system and app pairing: Does the extension work on your desktop platform, and are particular features available only when the provider’s app is installed?
- Browser-specific controls: Look for the controls you actually need, such as per-site routing or WebRTC safeguards, and confirm which extension provides them.
- Data limit and price: Check whether there is a monthly allowance, recurring subscription cost, tax, or device limit. Do not compare a browser-only free allowance with a full-device subscription as if they were the same product.
- Privacy disclosures: Read the provider’s privacy policy and any audit disclosures. Product features alone do not establish what data a provider retains or how a service performs in practice.
What a VPN does—and does not—do for privacy
A VPN changes which provider sits between your device and the wider internet: the VPN service can observe network information that would otherwise be visible to your internet provider, while websites and services may see the VPN’s exit IP address instead of your usual one. This shifts trust; it does not create full anonymity. Mozilla’s description of its built-in feature specifically presents IP masking as an addition to HTTPS, not a replacement for it. A VPN cannot by itself make an insecure website secure or prevent every form of tracking.
