To use one with GitHub, connect the repository, configure the task and trigger, then review its branch output before merging. Choose GitHub Actions instead when you want automation defined and run as a repository workflow.
What Claude Code Routines do with GitHub
A Routine is a saved Claude Code configuration that combines a prompt with selected repositories and connectors. It runs as a cloud session, so it does not rely on your computer staying on. Anthropic announced Routines as a research preview on April 14, 2026; availability and product details can change. See Anthropic’s announcement and the Claude Code Routines documentation.
A Routine can start on a recurring or one-time schedule, through an API call, or when a configured GitHub event occurs. One Routine can have multiple trigger types—for instance, a pull-request review prompt can run for new pull requests and on a nightly schedule.
Set up a Routine for a GitHub repository
- Check access. Confirm that Claude Code on the web and an eligible account plan are available to you. Anthropic’s April 14, 2026 launch announcement listed Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise when Claude Code on the web was enabled. Treat this as dated eligibility information, not a guarantee of current access.
- Connect GitHub. Give Claude access to the repository the Routine needs. For a GitHub event trigger, install the Claude GitHub App on the repository being monitored. Check that the connection has not expired and that its repository scope is appropriate.
- Create the Routine. Use the Claude Code web interface, or start with
/schedulein the CLI to create a scheduled Routine. The web interface can configure API triggers and, depending on the current version, GitHub triggers. The documentation specifies Claude Code v2.1.227 or later for adding a GitHub trigger from the CLI; check the current requirement in the documentation before following a CLI walkthrough. - Write a specific prompt. State the task, the expected result, and any boundaries. For example: “Review this pull request for security issues and correctness. Do not modify files; report findings with file paths and severity.” Select only the repositories and connectors the task needs.
- Choose a trigger. Add a schedule, API trigger, or GitHub event trigger. For a GitHub trigger, select the event and filter actions as needed so the Routine starts only for matching activity.
- Review write access and branch controls. By default, a Routine pushes changes to a branch prefixed
claude/. Use GitHub branch protection or rulesets to restrict where it can push, and keep important branches protected. - Inspect the first runs. Check the session result, generated branch, and any pull request before relying on the automation. Confirm that the Routine did what the prompt asked and did not exceed its intended repository or connector access.
What happens when a GitHub event triggers a run
Each matching event starts a new Claude Code session; sessions are not reused across events. The repository is cloned again for every run, and Claude starts from the default branch unless the prompt specifies another branch. A Routine can run shell commands, use skills committed to the cloned repository, and call its configured connectors, so limit access and describe the permitted work clearly.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the GitHub connection is missing or expires, runs may be skipped. The documentation says reconnecting within 72 hours resumes the Routine; after that period, it turns off and must be re-enabled. Check connection status if expected runs do not appear.
Claude Code Routines vs. GitHub Actions
| Consideration | Claude Code Routines | GitHub Actions |
|---|---|---|
| Where configuration lives | Saved Routine configuration in Claude Code | Workflow configuration in the repository |
| Execution context | Claude Code session on Anthropic’s web infrastructure | GitHub Actions runner |
| Trigger options | Schedule, API call, and GitHub repository event; a Routine can combine triggers | GitHub workflow events and scheduled workflows |
| Repository and integration access | Selected repositories and configured connectors; GitHub access is needed to clone a repository | Controlled by workflow permissions and configuration |
| Scheduling detail | Schedule options are documented by Anthropic; a minimum interval is not stated here (Claude Code Routines documentation) | POSIX cron; scheduled workflows run in UTC by default, can use an IANA timezone, and have a five-minute minimum interval (GitHub Docs) |
Use Routines when the work benefits from a Claude Code session with repository context and configured connectors, or when you want a cloud task triggered by an API call or GitHub event. Use Actions when the automation belongs in the repository’s workflow configuration, should run as CI, or needs GitHub’s workflow event and permission model. They can also complement each other: an internal tool or deployment hook can call a Routine, while Actions handles repository-native workflow automation.

Anthropic’s April 14, 2026 announcement described Routines as a research preview. It listed daily limits of five Routines for Pro, 15 for Max, and 25 for Team and Enterprise, with additional use possible. These were launch-announcement limits, not durable guarantees; check the current Claude Code documentation and your account before planning around them.
