If ChatGPT is taking a long time to respond, there may not be one identifiable cause. OpenAI lists service conditions, peak-hour demand, browser or device issues, network restrictions, and long conversations among the possibilities. Check them one at a time: first look at OpenAI’s status, then test a new chat and a different browser or network. These checks can help narrow down where the delay occurs, but they do not by themselves prove its cause.

Why is ChatGPT responding slowly?

A slow response is a symptom, not a diagnosis. OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance points to several possible sources:

  • Service conditions: an incident or maintenance may affect response times. OpenAI also says users may notice slowness during peak hours.
  • Browser or app conditions: cached data, cookies, extensions, or a temporary issue with the app or browser may interfere.
  • Conversation length: if a chat has many turns, OpenAI recommends testing with a new conversation.
  • Device or connection: other programs or tabs may be using device resources; network conditions, VPNs, company network policies, or lower bandwidth on mobile data may also be factors.

OpenAI’s guidance does not identify a single cause for an individual slow session or establish that a particular model, plan, or device is responsible.

Work through these checks in order

1. Check whether OpenAI reports a service issue

Visit OpenAI Status and look for an incident or maintenance report that could affect ChatGPT. Status changes over time, so check the live page when the slowdown occurs. OpenAI notes that reported availability can vary by customer tier, model, and API features.

2. Compare the current chat with a new one

Open a new chat and try a brief prompt. OpenAI specifically recommends starting a new conversation when the existing one is long or has many turns. If the new chat responds more quickly, that is a useful comparison—not proof that conversation length was the root cause.

3. Refresh, then compare browser sessions

  1. Refresh the page or restart the ChatGPT app.
  2. Try ChatGPT in a private or incognito window. This can help check whether extensions or existing browser data are involved.
  3. If the private window is faster, disable extensions—particularly ones that block scripts or ads—and test again.
  4. Try another browser, and close unnecessary tabs or programs while testing.

4. Clear browser data if the delay continues

Clear the browser cache and cookies, then sign in and test again. For a stuck or blank page, OpenAI also recommends signing out and back in and clearing site data for chat.openai.com. Clearing data may sign you out or remove saved site state.

5. Compare devices and networks

Try another device or network, changing one factor at a time where possible. If the issue occurs on a work network or while using a VPN, OpenAI recommends checking with the organization’s IT administrator. Mobile data may have lower bandwidth, so a comparison with another connection can help identify whether the network is relevant.

If a response appears stuck

When generation seems stalled, OpenAI’s suggested sequence is to wait 30–60 seconds to see if the response completes, then click Stop generating and Regenerate. The interval is a troubleshooting instruction, not a measured estimate of normal response time.

  1. Wait 30–60 seconds.
  2. Select Stop generating, then Regenerate.
  3. If it remains stuck, try a new chat and reload or hard-refresh the page.
  4. Sign out and back in; disable a VPN, proxy, or secure DNS temporarily if you use one.
  5. Test another browser, network, or device.

When to contact OpenAI Support

If the slowdown persists across browsers, devices, and networks, gather details that can help Support investigate the behavior rather than guessing at its cause. OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance recommends collecting:

  • A HAR file and any browser-console errors.
  • Timestamps for when the problem occurred.
  • The model you were using.
  • The conversation URL or ID.

Then contact OpenAI Support through the Help Center. Describe what happens and which comparisons you tried; avoid presenting a suspected cause as confirmed.

What a slow response does not establish

The official troubleshooting guidance does not provide a model-by-model latency comparison, a quantitative response-time guarantee, or an individualized diagnosis. It also does not prescribe buying hardware or upgrading to a paid plan as a fix. Use the checks above to isolate possible service, conversation, browser, device, and network factors before drawing conclusions.
