You can play Nintendo DS games on a PC with a DS emulator such as DeSmuME or melonDS. Download the emulator from its official project page, open a game file you are authorized to use, and configure the two-screen display and controls as needed. The BIOS and firmware setup differs: melonDS needs system-file dumps from an original DS or DS Lite for firmware boot, while DeSmuME documents built-in BIOS and firmware for loading and running games.

How do I play DS games on my PC?

Start by choosing an emulator, checking its system-file requirements, and opening your game file. Use the emulator project’s official download source rather than an old third-party download mirror. melonDS’s downloads page provides operating-system choices; check it for current availability and platform support.

  1. Choose an emulator. DeSmuME and melonDS are documented Nintendo DS emulator options. Download the current build from the project’s official distribution source.
  2. Decide whether you need a firmware boot. Check the BIOS and firmware requirements for your emulator and preferred startup mode before configuring it.
  3. Open the game file. Use the emulator’s game-opening workflow to select a game file. Menu labels can change between versions, so consult the documentation for the build you downloaded rather than relying on an outdated button path.
  4. Arrange the screens and controls. The DS uses two screens and touch input. Choose a display arrangement and map controls to suit the game; the exact settings and touch behavior vary, so consult the emulator’s current documentation.
  5. Save your progress. Save through the game’s own save system. If your emulator supports save states, you can also capture a snapshot and resume from it later.

Which DS emulator should I use?

Both DeSmuME and melonDS are documented choices. The clearest distinction in the available project documentation is how they handle system files, not a proven difference in speed or game compatibility.

Emulator System-file setup What to check
melonDS For firmware boot, melonDS requires BIOS and firmware dumps from an original Nintendo DS or DS Lite. See the project’s current instructions and download page for supported operating systems and setup details.
DeSmuME Its Windows manual says built-in BIOS and firmware can load and execute game files. External images enable additional original-system behavior and a fuller DS boot. The manual is old; treat it as guidance on the distinction between internal and external system files, not as proof of current menu labels or release status.

The cited documentation does not establish a controlled comparison of current performance or compatibility, so neither option can be declared faster or more compatible on that basis.

Do I need BIOS files for melonDS or DeSmuME?

It depends on the emulator and the startup mode you want. For melonDS firmware boot, the project requires BIOS and firmware files dumped from an original DS or DS Lite. DeSmuME’s Windows manual describes internal BIOS and firmware that can run games, with external images available for a fuller boot and additional behavior. Follow the relevant project’s current instructions; the documentation does not establish a universal setup requirement for every emulator mode.

How should I handle saves?

Use the game’s normal save feature as your primary progress record. DeSmuME’s manual describes save states as snapshots that let you resume from the captured point. A state is an emulator convenience, not a replacement for an in-game save; keeping ordinary saves reduces the risk of losing progress if a state is unavailable or unusable.

Where can I get DS game files, and what is legal?

Nintendo of America Support says games offered over peer-to-peer networks or through third-party file-hosting links are unauthorized copies. It states, “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal,” and says Nintendo does not currently offer or authorize a product for playing or downloading its game files on personal computers. Read Nintendo’s US support FAQ.

Nintendo UK separately explains its position on emulator software, unauthorized emulator software, and circumvention in its legal information. These are Nintendo’s statements, not a complete analysis of copyright law in every jurisdiction or of every emulator, backup, or circumvention scenario. Owning a cartridge does not by itself settle those questions. Use only game files you are legally entitled to use where you live, and do not use ROM-download links presented as sources for this guide.

If you are considering a used physical game, Nintendo advises checking authenticity. Its guidance points to suspiciously low prices, packaging and manuals, and the Original Nintendo Seal of Quality as things to consider; see Nintendo’s counterfeit-game guidance. A cartridge is not established as a required emulator accessory.
