There isn’t enough matched, same-location testing to say Freedom Mobile’s 5G is better than your current carrier overall. It may be a good fit if Freedom has dependable coverage where you live and travel, your phone and plan qualify, and its price and data allowance work for you. Whether you’ll notice a speed difference depends on your exact locations and whether your phone is using Freedom’s 5G+ or another network layer.
What the available testing says
WhistleOut reports hands-on Freedom Mobile testing in Toronto, North York and Mississauga using a Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and a 150GB Total Freedom plan. The reviewer tried streaming, hotspot use and calling in indoor, crowded and transit settings. WhistleOut describes performance as solid in the major-city areas it tested, with more variation outside major 5G zones and between cities. This is a localized, qualitative review—not a controlled, same-route comparison with other carriers.
WhistleOut’s overview, last updated April 14, 2026, reports around 250 Mbps average speeds in Toronto and other supported metro cities from its hands-on testing. It also gives estimated real-world ranges of 350–800 Mbps download and 20–60 Mbps upload for 5G+, and 50–225 Mbps download and 5–25 Mbps upload for low-band 5G. Those are WhistleOut figures, not guaranteed speeds or a matched incumbent-carrier result. Read WhistleOut’s Freedom Mobile 5G overview and its review and test details.
Freedom says theoretical peak download speeds can reach up to 900 Mbps in select cities. That is a carrier-stated peak, not a typical result or a promise of what you will see. Actual performance varies by location and conditions. Freedom’s 5G support page explains its stated capabilities and availability.

Does Freedom work where you live and commute?
Check the current Freedom coverage map at your home, workplace, and the routes you regularly use—not just at the city or postal-code level. Freedom distinguishes its subscription area, its own network coverage and service on partner networks. Its map is an estimate: terrain, foliage, technical capacity and weather can affect reception, and the carrier does not guarantee service at a specific spot. A population-coverage figure cannot tell you whether reception will be reliable inside your building or on your commute. Check Freedom’s coverage map and coverage information.
Pay attention to which network your phone is using in places that matter. Service on a partner network may differ from service on Freedom’s own network, so a single strong result in a covered area does not establish how the whole trip will perform.

Will your phone get Freedom 5G+?
Freedom says 5G and 5G+ access depends on a compatible phone, SIM and plan, as well as being in a covered area. In a July 24, 2026 announcement, the company said 5G+ access was enabled across all plans at no additional cost, while still requiring a compatible phone and SIM and 5G+ coverage. That policy statement does not remove the device or location requirements; check Freedom’s current eligibility details before switching.
Freedom’s 5G support page names Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, London and the Greater Toronto Area for its up-to-900-Mbps theoretical peak claim. Availability and plan rules can change, so use the current support page and coverage map rather than treating that list or headline peak as a service guarantee. Review Freedom’s current 5G requirements.

How to compare Freedom with your carrier fairly
A useful comparison tests the carriers you are actually considering in the places and situations where you use your phone. Keep the handset, route, test times and tasks as consistent as practical. Record enough detail to distinguish a real local advantage from a one-off speed-test result.
- Check eligibility and coverage: Confirm that the exact phone and SIM are compatible, then check Freedom’s map for your home, work and regular routes.
- Use the same locations and conditions: Compare at the same indoor and outdoor spots, on the same commute or transit route, and at comparable times.
- Test the tasks you care about: Note download and upload speeds, latency if you measure it, call and text reliability, streaming, hotspot performance, and indoor or transit results.
- Record the network and plan: Note whether the phone is on Freedom’s network or a partner network, which 5G layer is in use if known, and the plan’s price and data allowance.
- Repeat before drawing a conclusion: Record the number of tests and their limits. One speed test or one city cannot establish a network-wide ranking.
How to decide whether switching makes sense
Freedom is worth considering if coverage checks and your own comparison support the places you use most, your phone and plan qualify, and the price and included data suit your needs. If the crucial question is whether it beats your current carrier on a particular commute or inside your home, the available WhistleOut review cannot answer that for your locations; check the map and compare the service there before switching.
