You can use ToolJet MCP to help scaffold a shared storm-and-outage dashboard in an existing ToolJet workspace. The result should be treated as a configurable situational-awareness prototype—not as an outage-data provider, emergency-management system, or certified dispatch platform. A useful build has three parts: a safely configured MCP connection, authorized alert and outage sources, and views that make data source, freshness, and ownership easy to see.

Define what the dashboard needs to answer

Start with the operating area, incident period, and decisions the team needs to support. A practical prototype should help users determine which weather alerts apply, where outages have been reported, which facilities or response resources need follow-up, what is confirmed versus stale or unverified, and what changed since the last update.

These are design choices, not a mandated FEMA screen layout. FEMA’s outage annex describes multiple tools and sources with different owners and access conditions; NIMS/ICS materials provide an incident-management context, but neither establishes that a ToolJet app is suitable for coordinating field response.

Configure ToolJet MCP with appropriate access

ToolJet describes MCP as a way for a compatible AI agent to connect to and work with a ToolJet workspace. In practice, the agent can create or modify apps and interact with connected data and certain workspace resources, subject to the permissions of the personal access token (PAT) used for the connection. See ToolJet’s MCP overview and setup instructions.

  1. Create a PAT in the ToolJet workspace intended for the prototype. Use an account with only the access the work requires; the agent’s capabilities follow the token owner’s permissions.
  2. Confirm the correct ToolJet deployment URL and workspace before connecting the client. ToolJet documents use with cloud and self-hosted instances.
  3. Set up the MCP client environment with Node.js 20 or newer, the documented requirement at the time of ToolJet’s 2026 documentation, and an MCP-compatible client.
  4. Keep a human review step before applying changes to shared workspace resources or connecting live operational data. ToolJet says platform activity can be associated with the PAT owner in audit logs.

ToolJet’s 2026 documentation lists 50 MCP tools, including tools for creating apps, inspecting and updating components, creating and querying ToolJet DB tables, validating app specifications, and managing app permissions. It also identifies five tools that permanently delete data and require explicit confirmation. The inventory is a product-documentation count, not a performance benchmark; check the current MCP tool reference because product inventories can change.

A cautious first prompt can ask the agent to inspect available components and data sources, scaffold pages and read-only views, and validate the app structure. Avoid asking it to delete data or make broad permission changes. Review generated changes before they affect a shared workspace.

Choose alert and outage data sources

Weather alerts from the National Weather Service

The NWS alerts service provides watches, warnings, advisories, and related products. Its documentation describes CAP v1.2, JSON-LD, and Atom index formats. NWS recommends following active CAP alerts through Atom indexes and retrieving full messages when needed; see the NWS API documentation.

For each alert, show its geographic scope, event, severity and urgency when provided, and issued, effective, and expiration times. Keep the alert’s own timestamps separate from the time your app last retrieved it. Link back to the source record, and do not turn technical alert wording into an impact prediction the source does not make.

NWS describes its API information as open data subject to reasonable rate limits, and the /alerts endpoint covers alerts issued during the previous seven days. Use a cache-aware refresh schedule, show the last successful refresh, and make failures or stale results visible. The documentation does not promise a particular rate quota or uptime. See NWS API data and access notes.

Outage observations and impact layers

Prefer the relevant utility’s outage feed or another authorized local source when one is available. Confirm its geographic coverage, update delay, credential requirements, permitted uses, fields, spatial resolution, ownership, and whether values are observed, modeled, or otherwise derived. Availability and terms are source-specific; ask the data owner before relying on an input operationally.

FEMA’s outage annex describes a range of situational-awareness tools, including EIA electric-system operating data and sources with specific access conditions. FEMA GIS documentation also describes power-status and health/medical impact layers. Some scores are relative priorities, not customer-outage counts; label them accordingly and never present them as a count of customers without power. The documented existence of a source does not establish that your organization can access it or that it is appropriate for dispatch. See FEMA’s Power Outage Incident Annex and FEMA’s power-outage GIS information.

Situation

  • Incident name, incident period, and operating area.
  • Summary of active alerts and reported outages, with source and refresh time visible.
  • Notable changes since the previous operational update.

Weather

  • Active NWS alerts filtered to an agreed geography, such as county or zone.
  • Event details, relevant alert timestamps, and a link to the source record.
  • An explicit state when the feed is unavailable or has not refreshed successfully.

Outages and impacts

  • Source-labeled outage observations and affected areas.
  • Approved impact indicators, with estimates or relative rankings identified as such.
  • Clear missing, stale, or unverified states; a blank map must not imply that no outage exists.

Resources and priorities

  • Critical facilities or response resources only when a trusted source and authorized workflow exist.
  • Clear distinction between user-entered status and status confirmed by an agency or source owner.

Update log

  • Operational edits recorded with timestamp, source or context, change, and responsible user.

Make freshness, provenance, and uncertainty visible

Data quality is part of the interface, not a back-office detail. Give every feed a source label and an observation or update timestamp. Show retrieval time separately from event time, retain the original source link, and label estimates and relative rankings so they cannot be mistaken for direct observations.

  • Use explicit states such as “unavailable,” “stale,” and “not verified.”
  • Show the last successful refresh and avoid implying that an empty map means there are no outages.
  • Preserve source ownership and distinguish agency-confirmed information from user-entered updates.
  • When a feed fails, make the failure apparent rather than silently retaining old data as if current.

These interface safeguards follow from the differing data owners, access arrangements, and update semantics described by NWS and FEMA; they are prudent design recommendations, not verbatim requirements imposed by those agencies.

Set boundaries before operational use

ToolJet MCP gives an AI agent a way to work inside a ToolJet workspace; it does not supply outage data or establish that a dashboard is approved for emergency operations. The cited sources do not establish that a ToolJet app meets any particular emergency-services certification, uptime objective, accessibility standard, security accreditation, or production dispatch requirement.

Before a team relies on the prototype, confirm source access and permitted use with each data owner, then review the app’s access controls and operational procedures with the organization responsible for the incident. Keep it in a situational-awareness role unless your organization has separately validated and authorized a broader use.
