For a free Mac VPN with no monthly data cap, Proton VPN Free is a sensible starting point. It offers unlimited bandwidth, but the app automatically chooses a free server and the plan does not guarantee streaming access or support BitTorrent. Windscribe Free is worth comparing if choosing a location and adjusting controls matter more, though its data allowance is capped and current figures vary across reviews. Neither option makes you anonymous or replaces Mac security basics.
Which free Mac VPN should you choose?
Choose based on what you need the VPN to do, not a provider’s “unlimited” label. Proton VPN Free is the clearest fit for general use when avoiding a monthly data cap matters most. Windscribe Free is a useful alternative when manual server choice and configurable features matter more than uncapped use. If you need a particular streaming catalog, peer-to-peer downloads, or a specific country, confirm that the free plan supports it before relying on the service.
| Service | Why consider it | Important free-plan caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN Free | Provider-stated unlimited bandwidth; a reasonable option for ongoing general use. | The app automatically selects a free server. Streaming access is not guaranteed, and Proton directs BitTorrent users to paid plans. Proton plan details |
| Windscribe Free | RTINGS describes selectable locations and controls including a kill switch and split tunneling, and names it its top tested free Mac pick. | It has a monthly data cap. Allowance figures conflict between recent reviews, so check Windscribe’s current plan terms rather than relying on an old number. RTINGS Mac comparison |
| PrivadoVPN Free | Another capped option to investigate if the leading choices do not fit. | Tom’s Guide lists a 10 GB allowance and says the privacy claims in its reviewed material lacked independent verification. Terms and review snapshots can change. Tom’s Guide free VPN comparison |
| hide.me Free | Useful as a reminder that a data allowance alone does not determine usability. | Tom’s Guide reported throttling to around 1 Mbps in its tests, which it found undermined everyday use. That is a reviewer observation, not a guaranteed speed on every Mac or network. Tom’s Guide free VPN comparison |
What Proton VPN Free offers on a Mac
Proton’s official macOS page lists free locations in the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, Singapore, Norway, Mexico, Switzerland, Canada, and the United States. The app automatically connects to one of its free servers rather than letting users freely choose a location. Availability and plan terms can change, so confirm them on Proton’s free VPN page.
Proton says the free plan has unlimited bandwidth and no time or speed limits. Those are provider-stated terms, not an independent measurement of the speed you will get. Distance to the assigned server, congestion, your internet connection, and the protocol can all affect performance. Proton’s comparison also reserves guaranteed streaming access for paid plans, and its BitTorrent instructions direct users to paid plans. See Proton’s plan comparison.

Top10VPN’s Mac review, last tested in August 2026, reports that Proton’s free plan allows one simultaneous connection and lists macOS Sonoma or newer. Treat those as that publication’s dated snapshot, not a substitute for checking Proton’s current compatibility and account terms. Top10VPN’s Proton Mac review.
When Windscribe Free may suit you better
Windscribe is worth comparing if choosing among server locations or using controls such as split tunneling is important. RTINGS’ 2026 Mac comparison names it its best tested free Mac VPN and reports a kill switch, split tunneling, and selectable locations. Its reported allowance is 2 GB per month without an email address and 10 GB with one. Tom’s Guide lists Windscribe at 15 GB, so published figures do not agree. Check Windscribe’s own current plan terms for the allowance and any account requirement before signing up; do not assume a review’s figure still applies. RTINGS and Tom’s Guide provide the differing review snapshots.

That makes Windscribe a choice about priorities, not an across-the-board winner: the ability to pick a location and use extra controls can be more valuable than unlimited data for some tasks, while the cap can be inconvenient for frequent use.
How to compare security and performance
Check the privacy evidence, not just the promise
A VPN encrypts traffic between your Mac and the VPN server. This can reduce what someone on the local network can see and changes the public IP address that remote sites observe. It does not make you anonymous, prevent malware, or stop tracking once traffic leaves the VPN. Check the provider’s privacy policy, the scope and date of any independent audit, whether app code is open source, and the provider’s jurisdiction. A feature list or a reviewer’s security rating is not proof that a service protects against every threat.

Proton says its free plan uses the same level of security as its paid plans; that is the provider’s claim. Top10VPN gives Proton a strong security assessment in its Mac review, but that is the reviewer’s evaluation, not a guarantee of anonymity or universal protection. Read the review and its testing context.
Test speed on your own connection
No directly comparable speed results for these services are established here. A VPN may feel slower or less consistent depending on your baseline connection, server distance, congestion, protocol, and free-plan restrictions. Compare your normal connection with a nearby VPN endpoint at the times you expect to use it, and test the activities that matter to you. Do not treat another reviewer’s test—or a provider’s “unlimited speed” wording—as a prediction for your Mac.

Match the plan to the task

- Streaming: Confirm the specific service and location work on the free tier. Proton does not guarantee free-plan streaming access.
- BitTorrent or other P2P use: Proton says this requires a paid plan; verify the rules for any alternative before using it.
- Several devices: Check simultaneous connection limits and whether your account can protect the devices you actually use. Top10VPN reports one connection for Proton Free in its August 2026 review snapshot.
- Specific country access: Confirm that the free plan lets you select the country you need; Proton Free automatically chooses a server from its free pool.
Do you need a VPN on your Mac?
Not everyone does. macOS and modern browsers already include built-in protections, and Apple’s iCloud+ Private Relay is another option for eligible subscribers, though it is not the same thing as a general-purpose VPN. A VPN is most useful when its concrete benefits—such as reducing exposure on untrusted Wi-Fi or presenting a different network location—match your needs. It does not replace system updates, careful app installation, strong account security, or protection against phishing and malware. RTINGS’ Mac VPN comparison discusses built-in protections in this context.
