Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →shared_map lets multiple Dart isolates work with map-like state by routing client operations to a map owned by another isolate. It does not make an ordinary Dart Map live shared memory: isolates still have separate memory and communicate through messages. That distinction matters when deciding whether the package fits your workload.
Can Dart isolates share a Map?
Not as one ordinary mutable object. Dart gives each isolate its own memory and event loop; state in one isolate is not directly accessible from another. Isolates communicate by sending messages, as the Dart concurrency guide and dart:isolate API explain.
shared_map offers a map-shaped interface over that message-passing model. Its documentation describes a server map in an owning isolate and client instances in auxiliary isolates. A client’s map operations send requests to the owner; they do not read or mutate the same heap object directly. See the package documentation.
How to pass a SharedMap reference to another isolate
The package’s documented workflow is to create a SharedStore, obtain a map by ID, retrieve its shared reference, pass the reference to another isolate, and construct a client map there. This is a reference workflow, not an independently tested recipe; confirm the API spelling and package version you pin before using it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Create the owner-side store and request a typed map:
final store = SharedStore('store-id'); final map = await store.getSharedMap<String, int>('map-id'); -
Get the map’s reference and make it available to the worker. The visible example and API reference use
sharedReference():final reference = map!.sharedReference(); -
Construct a client-side facade in the other isolate and use it:

final result = await Isolate.run(() async { final client = SharedMap<String, int>.fromSharedReference(reference); return client.get('key'); });
The package documentation prose also uses the spelling SharedMap.shareReference(), while its visible example and API reference name the method sharedReference(). Use the method exposed by the exact package version in your project rather than assuming these spellings are interchangeable.

Each auxiliary-isolate get or put is a message to the server-side map, according to the package documentation. The API also documents update(key, updater) as running the updater in the same memory context or isolate as the main instance. This lets callers use map-like operations while the owning instance remains responsible for the underlying state; it is not evidence of lock-free access or a broader consistency guarantee.
Because operations cross an isolate boundary, count and pattern of requests matter. The package suggests SharedMapCache to avoid unnecessary isolate requests, but publishes no performance guarantee or benchmark in the cited documentation. Measure your own access pattern before choosing a cache or claiming a speedup.

When is shared_map a better fit than ordinary isolate messaging?
| Approach | Communication model | Good fit to consider | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
Isolate.run() |
Run one computation in an isolate and receive its result. | A single, bounded computation. | Starting an isolate and moving data have overhead. |
Isolate.spawn() |
Spawn a worker that can handle messages over time. | Repeated work handled by a long-lived worker. | You design and manage the message protocol. |
shared_map |
A client-side map facade routes operations to an owning isolate. | Code that benefits from map-like access to owner-held state across isolates. | Each remote operation still involves message traffic; no package benchmark is stated. |
Dart recommends Isolate.run() for a single computation and Isolate.spawn() for a worker that handles multiple messages over time (Dart concurrency guide). Flutter cautions that spawning short-lived isolates and copying objects have overhead; a long-lived worker may suit repeated computations better. Isolate work can use other cores where available, but it is most useful when a real expensive computation or responsiveness problem justifies that overhead. See Flutter’s isolate guide.
Platform limits and Flutter considerations
Isolates are a Dart Native capability; the dart:isolate API does not support them on the web. Flutter’s compute() runs on the main thread in Flutter web, rather than moving work to a web isolate (Flutter isolate guide).

Estimate how often clients will call
get,put, or other operations. Remote map access still means messages, and the package’s cache suggestion is not a quantified performance result. -
Check that your target is Dart Native and verify the package’s current version and method names before integrating it. The linked package pages are labeled “latest”; the package documentation identifies version 1.1.9, but that may not remain current.
-
Benchmark the workload you actually ship. Neither the package documentation nor the cited Flutter guidance establishes a shared_map speedup, latency, memory cost, or throughput figure.
