Android Authority reported that an R1 launcher APK ran on a Pixel 6a well enough to complete setup and answer an assistant question, and separately reported Android 13 under the R1’s software. Rabbit’s CEO, Jesse Lyu, responded that the R1 is not an Android app, emphasizing its customized software and cloud-based services. The phone demonstration showed a limited interface experiment—not that a phone could replace the complete R1 device and service.
Why Rabbit said the R1 is not an Android app
After Android Authority reported running an R1 launcher APK on a Pixel phone, Lyu told the publication: “rabbit r1 is not an Android app.” He described Rabbit OS as customized for the R1, with bespoke Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and lower-level firmware modifications, while Rabbit OS and its Large Action Model (LAM) run in the cloud. He also said Rabbit does not support third-party clients and warned that unofficial apps or web clients could put user data at risk. Those are Rabbit’s stated position and warning, not an independent finding that every unofficial client is malicious.
The disagreement turns on what “the R1” means. Android is the software foundation; the launcher APK is an interface that can run in an Android environment; Rabbit’s cloud services provide AI functionality; and the R1 is a dedicated handheld product. Evidence about one layer does not establish that all the others are interchangeable.
What the Pixel 6a test actually demonstrated
Android Authority’s Mishaal Rahman reported on May 1, 2024, that he installed an R1 launcher APK supplied by a tipster on a Pixel 6a. He mapped the phone’s volume-up key to the R1’s hardware key, completed setup, created a rabbithole account and successfully asked the assistant a question. That is evidence the interface could support at least basic interaction on that phone.

The report did not test Spotify, vision features or other functions, and noted that Android system-level permissions could limit what worked. It therefore does not establish full R1 feature parity on a phone, or that the APK alone supplies the complete software stack or service.
What Android 13 under the hood tells you
In a separate May 1, 2024 report, Android Authority said Rahman identified Android 13 in metadata from an official R1 over-the-air update. The publication also reported a May 2023 security patch and said key AI features required data connectivity because processing took place in the cloud. These are dated findings from that 2024 report; they do not establish the device’s current software or security-patch status.

Android underneath does not make the complete R1 product simply a standard Android app. It helps explain why an Android launcher APK could run on a Pixel, while Rabbit’s customized firmware, cloud endpoints and dedicated controls distinguish the full device and service.

What Rabbit announced about the R1
Rabbit’s January 2024 launch announcement presented the R1 as a custom-built device for an app-free online experience, with a 2.88-inch touchscreen, 4 GB of memory, 128 GB of storage, a push-to-talk button, scroll wheel, motorized rotating camera, Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity. Rabbit announced a $199 launch price at that time. That historical announcement is not evidence of current pricing or availability.
