What do version and apc mean?
Agent Project Context (APC) documentation describes a repository-owned context convention, centered on AGENTS.md and a canonical .apc/ directory. Its minimal .apc/project.json example is:

}The APC guide uses version for the project version represented by this metadata and apc for the APC target version expected by the project. The fields may contain the same value, as in the example, but they describe separate version histories. See the APC introduction and first-project guide.
Should the project version and APC version match?
No. A project release can advance from 0.1.0 to 0.2.0 while apc remains 0.1.0 if the repository’s APC context format and compatibility target have not changed. A mismatch alone does not indicate an error; it can simply mean the application and context format changed independently.

The APC documentation does not establish one release policy for every project. Follow your project’s policy for version; do not infer an APC format migration just because that number increased.
When should you change the APC version?
Change apc when you have made a compatibility decision about the repository’s APC context, not merely because you shipped application code. Review the declaration alongside the actual context files, including AGENTS.md and the contents of .apc/, before changing it.

- If application code changes but the context remains compatible with the same APC target, update the project
versionas appropriate and leaveapcunchanged. - If the context changes in a way that requires a different APC target, update
apcto match that decision. - If both the application and context compatibility change, update both fields according to their respective policies.
APC is described as a proposal/current draft, so consumers may not all interpret or implement the convention identically. For parser or migration work, check the current APC documentation rather than assuming every reader enforces the same compatibility rules.
What belongs in APC context—and what does not?
The repository-owned APC context is intended to be durable shared project guidance. APC’s folder-structure documentation distinguishes it from local runtime state such as sessions, conversations, caches, and secrets. Keeping those separate helps reviewers see whether a change affects shared context rather than an individual’s local agent environment.

APX is a separate runtime/tooling project associated with reading APC context and running agents; it is not another name for the apc field. The APX repository documentation identifies it as the APC reference implementation/runtime. APC describes the context convention; APX is tooling that uses it. The available documentation does not establish broad vendor adoption of APC.
What if your metadata uses apf?
An article published by Manuel Bruña for Agent Project Context on September 19, 2026 reports that some early implementations used apf for the format version and that compatible consumers should accept this historical key during migration, while new projects should write apc (the article). Treat an existing apf entry as a possible migration case rather than copying it into new metadata by default. Because the APC convention is a draft and implementations may differ, verify the current specification’s migration guidance before writing a parser or changing existing metadata.
