If your Android phone says it’s connected to Wi-Fi but has no internet, it has joined the local wireless network—but that does not guarantee the network can reach the internet. Check whether the problem follows the phone or the Wi-Fi network, then work through the matching fixes below. Test a webpage after each change so you can tell what helped.

First, find out whether the problem is your phone or the Wi-Fi network

Use two quick comparisons before changing settings. Google Pixel Help recommends checking both the Android phone and the network; the results are clues, not proof of a single cause.

  1. Connect another device to the same Wi-Fi and try loading a webpage. If that device also has no internet, investigate the network or its internet service.
  2. Connect your Android phone to a different Wi-Fi network, if one is available. If the phone works there, the original network is more likely to be the problem. If it fails on multiple networks, focus on the phone.
  3. Check whether the problem affects every app and website or just one. Try a different webpage after each troubleshooting step.

Google Pixel Help puts the network-side possibility this way: “If your phone connects to the Wi-Fi network but you still have no internet, the problem is most likely with your internet connection.” The same guide also recommends checking the phone, so use the comparisons above rather than treating that as a diagnosis.

Try basic Wi-Fi and phone reconnection steps

Start with changes that are quick to reverse. Menu names differ by Android version and manufacturer; look under Settings for Wi-Fi or Internet if the labels below do not match your phone.

On supported Android versions, you can also use the Internet panel: swipe down from the top of the screen, touch and hold Internet, then tap Reset. This resets the connection and ends an active phone or video call, so do not use it during a call. See Android Help: Connect to Wi-Fi networks on your Android device.

If you are using public Wi-Fi, complete its sign-in

Hotels, cafes, airports, and other public hotspots may connect to your phone before granting internet access. Look for a sign-in notification or open a new browser page to bring up the network’s sign-in screen. Accept any required terms.

If multiple devices fail on the same Wi-Fi, check the network

When other devices on that Wi-Fi also cannot reach the internet, the issue is more likely to be the router, modem, internet service, or a network managed by someone else.

Restart equipment you own

  1. Follow the router and modem manuals. For equipment you own, Google recommends unplugging the power cords for 15 seconds, then reconnecting them.
  2. Check that cables are firmly connected at both ends.
  3. Wait a few minutes for the equipment to restart and its status lights to return to normal, then test the Android phone and another device.

If status lights remain abnormal or devices are still offline, contact your internet service provider. For work, school, or other managed Wi-Fi, contact the network administrator. There may be an outage or a provider-side issue; replacing equipment is not a useful first step without a diagnosis.

If the phone fails on several networks, reconnect and check its settings

Forget and rejoin the Wi-Fi network

In the phone’s Wi-Fi or Internet settings, select the saved network and choose Forget or its equivalent. Select the network again and enter its password. Menu wording varies by device. Test a webpage after reconnecting.

Check whether an app is interfering

Google’s troubleshooting instructions for Pixel phones recommend testing Wi-Fi in safe mode. If Wi-Fi works in safe mode but not during normal use, a downloaded app may be responsible. Restart the phone normally and remove recently installed apps one at a time, testing Wi-Fi after each removal. These are Pixel-specific instructions; safe-mode steps vary by manufacturer.

Enable automatic date and time

Incorrect date or time can cause connection problems. Google’s Pixel guide recommends enabling automatic time. Search your phone’s Settings for Date & time or Automatic date and time; the path and label depend on the device.

Consider a network-settings reset on Pixel

As a later step, Google’s Pixel guidance gives the path Settings > System > Reset options to reset Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings. This is Pixel-specific, and other Android phones may use different paths or reset options. Read the confirmation screen before proceeding and be prepared to reconnect to saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices.

Install available system updates

After reconnecting, check Settings for a system update. Updates can include fixes, though their availability and menu path vary by device.

Private DNS: change it only if you configured a custom provider

Private DNS protects DNS queries and answers; it is not a general-purpose fix for every Wi-Fi connection problem. Google says it is on by default where available and recommends keeping it on. If you deliberately set a provider hostname and suspect that configuration, changing Private DNS to Automatic can be a controlled diagnostic. Do not assume DNS is the cause or switch to an unverified provider. See Google Pixel Help: Control airplane mode, private DNS & other network settings.
