The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) estimates that approximately 5,164,000 Canadian employees and customers were affected, but the information involved varied by person. The OPC says payment-card numbers, guest passwords, and Social Insurance Numbers were not obtained.
What happened in the WestJet data breach?
The OPC’s July 2026 compliance letter says an unauthorized actor used social-engineering tactics and an employee’s personal information to access an employee account with administrative privileges and bypass multi-factor authentication (MFA). The actor moved through WestJet systems, deployed ransomware, took control of virtual servers, and accessed and exfiltrated data from cloud storage. The OPC says WestJet discovered the breach on June 12, 2025, and reported it to the Commissioner on June 14. WestJet says it identified suspicious activity on June 13, 2025. The incident date and the company’s public detection timeline are distinct.
WestJet said in its incident update: “At no point was the safety and integrity of our airline operations in question.” That is the company’s statement about its operations.
How many people were affected, and what data was involved?
The OPC’s July 2026 letter puts the scope at approximately 5,164,000 Canadian WestJet employees and customers. The affected information differed between individuals; the categories below may have applied to some people, not necessarily to everyone.

WestJet’s September 29, 2025 update said it was not aware of the data being misused for identity theft or fraud at that time. This is a dated statement about what the company knew then, not a guarantee that misuse could never occur.
What should affected WestJet customers do?
Check whether you received a notice
If WestJet emailed or wrote to you directly, use that notice to learn which kinds of your information may have been involved and whether you are eligible for a protection service. WestJet says eligibility and access instructions are provided in individual notices. The OPC says WestJet offered affected individuals a 24-month credit-monitoring and identity-theft-protection subscription; this is not described as an open service for anyone to enroll in.

Reduce the risk of follow-up fraud
- Watch for phishing emails and fraudulent calls or texts that refer to WestJet, travel, or the breach.
- Do not give personal information to a caller unless you have independently verified who they are.
- Review bank statements and credit files for activity you do not recognize.
- WestJet says it does not email customers asking them to provide payment-card information.
Before you travel
Check your flight details before departure. WestJet’s incident FAQ recommends doing so as part of its customer guidance.
If a minor may be affected
The OPC says parents and guardians of affected minors were told about a High-Risk Fraud Alert database because minors are not eligible for the credit-monitoring service. The OPC also clarifies that Social Insurance Numbers were not impacted; monitoring a minor’s SIN is described as a harm-mitigation practice, not evidence that the SIN was stolen.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Has WestJet contained the intrusion?
WestJet says containment is complete and that it implemented additional system and data-security measures. Its customer guidance addresses practical precautions, while the OPC’s regulatory review concerns the safeguards in place at the time of the breach and the adequacy of notifications under Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

What is the OPC investigation status?
The OPC announced on August 5, 2025, that it had opened a Commissioner-initiated investigation. A compliance letter signed July 8 and modified July 14, 2026, says WestJet accepted commitments to provide a confidential summary of an independent external security assessment by August 7, 2026, and information about recommendations by September 7, 2026. The Commissioner said the OPC would review the recommendations and their implementation and could discontinue the investigation if satisfied the commitments were fulfilled, while retaining discretion to continue or expand it.
The available information does not establish whether the deadlines were met or whether the investigation was later discontinued, continued, or expanded. The compliance letter is not an admission of liability or wrongdoing by WestJet, nor a finding by the Commissioner that WestJet contravened PIPEDA.
