There is no verified, universal DIY remote circuit for Sony DSLR cameras. The right approach depends on your exact body: some listed models support a wired release through Sony’s REMOTE Terminal, while infrared (IR) operation is model-specific. Identify the full model name and its supported connection before building or buying anything; do not guess at connector pins or short camera contacts.
First identify your Sony DSLR model and remote connection
“Sony DSLR” covers bodies with different remote options. Find the complete model name on the camera body, then check that model’s manual or Sony support page for a remote-release connection and operating instructions. A wired release needs a compatible camera-side terminal; an IR remote needs a compatible camera and a clear path to its sensor.
Sony’s RM-VPR1 compatibility article lists these DSLR bodies for use with its REMOTE Terminal cable:
- DSLR-A100, DSLR-A200, DSLR-A300, DSLR-A350
- DSLR-A500, DSLR-A550, DSLR-A560, DSLR-A580
- DSLR-A700, DSLR-A850, DSLR-A900
Confirm your exact model and socket against Sony’s list before choosing a cable or attempting a build. The list does not establish a DIY pinout or wiring method.

What a DIY wired remote requires—and what is not established
A wired button may sound like a simple project, but the official information available here does not specify the connector dimensions, contact functions, voltage, or wiring diagram for a homemade release. Those details must be verified for the exact camera model before connecting a switch. Do not infer pin functions from the number of pins or experiment by shorting contacts: an incorrect connection could fail to trigger the camera or damage equipment.
For a model-specific build, use a reliable wiring source that explicitly identifies the body and terminal, and verify the connector and electrical details before assembling it. Until those details are established, it is safer to use a compatible finished remote than to follow a supposedly universal Sony DSLR circuit.

IR remote operation is a separate, model-specific option
IR avoids a cable but is not a universal workaround. The camera must support remote operation, the correct mode must be enabled, and the transmitter must reach the camera’s IR sensor. Sony’s instructions for the DSLR-A900 provide one model-specific example:
- Use the A900’s Drive control/menu to enable Remote Commander, following the camera’s operating instructions.
- Aim a compatible IR remote at the sensor on the front of the camera.
- Use the remote’s shutter control; the A900 instructions also describe an RMT-DSLR1 2SEC button that releases the shutter after a two-second delay.
These are A900 instructions, not a menu recipe for every Sony DSLR. Check your own model’s manual before relying on IR or trying to reproduce its signal with a homemade transmitter.

Sony Support states that the maximum operating distance for its RMT-DSLR1, RMT-DSLR2, and RMT-VP1K IR remotes is 25 feet (7.5 meters), depending on the environment. That figure applies to those branded remotes; it does not establish the range of a homemade transmitter.
Choose between a DIY project and a compatible remote

Sony describes the RM-VPR1 as a wired remote and says it includes Multi Terminal and REMOTE Terminal cables. Its inclusion of both cable types does not make it compatible with every DSLR: use the model list and confirm the camera’s terminal before choosing it.

Sony’s compatibility and operating instructions help identify supported bodies and explain particular remote functions. They do not provide a universal DIY wired-release schematic, a complete pinout for every listed body, or a DIY IR command protocol. Without model-specific technical details, a build guide would require guessing, so no universal wiring or transmitter instructions are safe to give.
