Did Aflac have a data breach?
Yes. Aflac described the event as unauthorized network access. Its June 20, 2025 statement said preliminary findings indicated that social engineering was used to gain access and that the incident was part of a cybercrime campaign against the insurance industry. The company did not identify a suspected group.
Aflac said it detected suspicious activity on June 12, began its cyber incident response, and stopped the intrusion within hours. It also said the business remained operational and its systems were not affected by ransomware. In the company’s words, “We promptly initiated our cyber incident response protocols and stopped the intrusion within hours.”
At the time of its June 20 SEC filing, Aflac said its review of potentially affected files was at an early stage. It could not yet determine how many people were affected, and the full scope and potential impact were unknown. That was the company’s position at initial disclosure, not a final nationwide count.

What information may have been involved?
Aflac’s initial statement said potentially impacted files contained claims information, health information, Social Security numbers and/or other personal information associated with customers, beneficiaries, employees, agents and other people connected with its U.S. business. The company’s wording does not mean every person’s information was involved or that every listed data type applied to each person.
In an update filed with Washington’s Office of the Attorney General on December 19, 2025, Aflac said files were determined on December 4 to contain at least some listed data elements for approximately 432,025 known Washington residents. The listed elements included:

The Washington figure is specific to known residents of that state. The sources available do not establish a reliable nationwide total, so it should not be described as the number of people affected across the United States.
How can you tell if you were affected?
If Aflac sent you an individual notice, read it for the information that applies to you, including the data elements identified, enrollment instructions and deadline. Use the contact details in your own notice to ask Aflac to confirm whether you are eligible for the offered support and whether you have already enrolled.

Aflac’s public sample notice lists a dedicated call center at 1-855-361-0305, but the sample’s enrollment codes and deadlines are individualized. Check your own notice for current contact and enrollment details rather than relying on a general date or code.
If you have not received a notice but are concerned, contact Aflac through contact information you can independently verify. The incident statements cited here do not establish that every Aflac customer or policyholder was affected.

What support did Aflac offer?
Aflac said people who contacted its dedicated call center could receive free credit monitoring and identity-theft protection, plus Medical Shield, for 24 months. Its later sample notice describes CyEx Medical Shield as including credit monitoring, identity-theft protection, medical-fraud protection and customer support for that period.
The sample notice says Aflac locked accounts identified as impacted, reset passwords and increased monitoring for suspicious activity. It also says people who had already enrolled after an earlier Aflac communication did not need to enroll again. Follow your individual notice to determine whether you need to take action and when.

In its December 2025 Washington update, Aflac said it began notifying identified Washington residents on December 19 and was notifying major consumer reporting agencies. The company also said it was not aware of fraudulent use of personal information resulting from the incident. That describes Aflac’s reported knowledge at the time; it cannot guarantee that misuse will not occur.
What should you do if you received an Aflac notice?
- Read the notice and note the details. Check which data elements Aflac says may apply to you, the enrollment deadline and the specific instructions for activating any offered services.
- Contact the call center using your notice. Ask whether you are eligible, whether you have already enrolled and what deadline applies. Do not share an enrollment code outside the official process described in your notice.
- Review your credit reports and financial accounts. Look for unfamiliar activity, and contact the relevant credit-reporting agency or financial institution if you find something you do not recognize.
- Check insurance statements and health-related records. Watch for unfamiliar claims, services or other activity, and contact the organization that maintains the account or record if something looks wrong.
Aflac’s notice advises reviewing credit reports, financial accounts and insurance statements. The available notice does not say that recipients must buy a separate monitoring service or a physical security product.
What is known—and what remains uncertain?
Aflac publicly reported the detection date, its account of containment and the categories of information potentially involved. Its later Washington filing supplied a state-specific count and data-element list. Those details do not establish a nationwide affected-person total or show that the same information applied to every person.
