Antivirus software is the familiar name for consumer software designed to protect against malware, but no single test result can tell every user whether a product is sufficient. For Windows users, Microsoft Defender earned a 6.0/6.0 protection score in AV-TEST’s May–June 2026 test of Defender Antivirus (Consumer) 4.18 on Windows 11 Professional. That is encouraging evidence for that product and test period—not a guarantee against infection or a verdict for other devices and needs.
What antivirus, anti-spyware, and anti-malware software do
In consumer use, “antivirus” commonly describes software intended to protect against malware more broadly. AV-TEST’s evaluation, for example, groups infections such as viruses, worms, and Trojan horses as malware, while assessing real-world zero-day attacks—including web and email threats—in a separate measure. These categories help explain the scope of a test; they do not establish a formal boundary between antivirus, anti-spyware, and anti-malware, or prove that every product covers every threat.
When comparing products, look at the protection claims and test results rather than assuming that a product name alone tells you which threats it covers.
Is Microsoft Defender enough?
AV-TEST awarded Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) 4.18 a protection score of 6.0 out of 6.0 in its May–June 2026 test on Windows 11 Professional, English 64-bit. The same report recorded 100% detection in both May and June for widespread and prevalent malware in its stated reference set. This is positive independent-test evidence for Defender on that Windows 11 configuration and during that period. It cannot guarantee protection for an individual, establish results on another operating system, or determine whether a particular person would benefit from paid features. Whether Defender is enough for you depends on your devices and needs; the cited test does not make that personal assessment.
How to compare antivirus software
A useful comparison considers protection alongside the software’s effect on everyday use. AV-TEST evaluates protection, performance, and usability; its reported performance results depend on test hardware and methodology. The May–June 2026 report says it continuously evaluated 16 home-user security products using default settings, and that it used current publicly available versions, allowed updates and cloud queries, and focused on realistic scenarios with components and protection layers enabled. - Check the platform and version. Confirm the tested product version, operating system, and test dates. A Windows 11 result should not be treated as a result for macOS, Android, iOS, or another Windows setup.
- Distinguish the threat measures. Real-world zero-day attacks and detection of widespread, prevalent malware in a reference set are different measures. Do not combine them into one supposedly universal detection rate.
- Consider performance and usability. Protection is not the only factor: look at how the product affects ordinary tasks and how usable its protections are, bearing in mind the test’s hardware and methods.
- Compare like with like. Check whether products were tested in the same period, under the same conditions, and against the same threat sets. The cited Defender result alone does not support ranking it against competitors.
- Match features to your needs. A test score does not establish whether paid extras are worth the cost for your situation. Compare the features and platform support you actually need rather than assuming that a subscription is necessary.
What the reported scores do—and do not—mean
A 6.0/6.0 protection score is AV-TEST’s score for the specified Defender version and Windows 11 test period. It is not a promise of perfect protection in every circumstance. Similarly, the 100% May and June figures apply to the test’s widespread and prevalent malware reference set; they should not be presented as a detection rate for all malware or for the separately assessed zero-day attacks.
For a decision beyond that specific Windows test, consult recent independent results for the platform and use case you care about. The cited report does not settle cross-platform performance or every product’s value for an individual user.
