Anthropic’s public documentation does not establish that Claude Code categorically avoids retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or explain a definitive internal reason for its architecture. It does document a different set of practical tools: Claude Code can read selected files, manage conversation context, and use prompt caching to reduce the cost of repeated prompt prefixes. Taken together, those practices suggest why retrieval is a cost-curve decision—not a universal requirement.
The key distinction is that caching makes repeated context cheaper to process; it does not search a repository for relevant code. Whether selective reading, a broader context, or an external retrieval index makes sense depends on the task, the amount of useful context, and the costs of finding and maintaining it.
What the title gets right—and what the evidence does not establish
It is too strong to say, as a verified fact, that Claude Code “doesn’t use RAG.” Anthropic’s public Claude Code materials describe context management, selective file access, and prompt caching, but they do not provide a complete account of Claude Code’s internal retrieval architecture or state that it never uses retrieval-like mechanisms.
A more supportable explanation is that not every coding task benefits from a separate retrieval index. If Claude can inspect a small number of relevant files directly, adding an index may introduce setup and maintenance costs without enough benefit. If a task needs information scattered across a large repository, selective retrieval may reduce the amount of irrelevant context sent. Which approach is economical depends on the workload; Anthropic’s cited materials do not publish a universal break-even point for Claude Code versus an external RAG system.

How context, retrieval, and caching differ
| Approach | What it does | What it does not do | Main cost consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct, selective file access | Lets Claude inspect chosen paths, functions, or files for a task. | Does not automatically make a repository-wide index or guarantee that every relevant file has been selected. | How much useful material Claude needs to read and how much unnecessary material is included. |
| RAG or indexed retrieval | Searches an indexed collection and supplies selected material to the model. | Does not make retrieved passages relevant by itself or eliminate index setup and upkeep. | Whether better selection offsets retrieval, indexing, and maintenance overhead. |
| Prompt caching | Reuses computation for an unchanged prompt prefix across requests that match it. | Does not search for relevant files, remove irrelevant context, or shrink the context window occupied by that material. | How much stable prefix content is reused, and whether requests preserve the same prefix. |
These are not interchangeable choices. Caching can complement either direct file access or retrieval: a request may reuse a stable prefix while still adding new task-specific content. But a cache hit is not a relevance decision. Claude still has to receive the context, and it still counts toward the model’s available context window.
Why an agent’s retrieval strategy follows a cost curve
Context can accumulate over a session
In an agent workflow, later turns may include conversation history and tool-related context from earlier work. Anthropic’s Claude Code guidance treats this repeated context as part of the cost picture. A broad context can help when the task genuinely depends on many connected details, but carrying unneeded history or noisy command output can make later requests more expensive.
Retrieval has costs of its own
An index must be created and kept useful as source files change. Each task also needs a search or selection step, and the retrieved passages must actually cover what the model needs. Retrieval can be valuable when it consistently narrows a large body of material to relevant evidence; it can be wasteful when the task is simple, the index is costly to maintain, or retrieval misses important context.

Repeated context changes the economics
When several turns reuse an unchanged prefix, prompt caching can reduce the cost of processing that repeated portion. When requests differ early in the prefix, reuse may be lost. As a result, the relative appeal of broader context, selective reading, or indexed retrieval can shift with session length, the amount of relevant information, cache-hit behavior, retrieval quality, and index upkeep.

What Anthropic documents about Claude Code context management
Point Claude at the material that matters
Claude Help Center guidance recommends naming a relevant path or function so Claude can read selectively rather than pasting an entire file. It also recommends trimming logs and keeping large artifacts on disk for reference. The guide notes that using an @-mention for a file injects that file and its CLAUDE.md tree into context; a bare path can be preferable when conserving tokens.

Keep persistent instructions lean
The same guidance says CLAUDE.md is prepended to every turn, so material placed there has a recurring context cost. Keep persistent instructions focused on information that is useful across tasks rather than treating the file as a general repository archive.
Clear or compact sessions when appropriate
Anthropic describes /clear as starting a fresh conversation while retaining project files, and /compact as summarizing conversation history to free context. Its August 14, 2026 Claude Code article also recommends clearing between tasks, choosing the model and effort before starting, and limiting noisy command output. These practices reduce unnecessary carried context; they are not RAG features.

How prompt caching affects the cost curve
Anthropic’s API documentation describes a five-minute default ephemeral cache lifetime, refreshed when cached content is used, and an optional one-hour cache duration at additional cost. Cache reuse depends on requests sharing a matching prompt prefix. Changing earlier content—such as the system prompt, tool definitions, or other material ahead of a cached region—can prevent reuse of later content. Per-request values such as timestamps can therefore undermine caching if placed too early in a supposedly stable prefix.

Anthropic’s cost-and-intelligence guide reports 2.7 to 5.3 times lower agent-loop cost on the benchmarks it measured, attributing the improvement to prompt caching. It also reports an 83% lower bill for a small triage agent, or 88% when input trimming was added. These are results for the guide’s benchmarks and that triage workload, respectively—not a forecast for every Claude Code session or proof that retrieval is unnecessary. The documentation page does not state a publication date.
The distinction matters in practice: caching can make repeated context cheaper without making that context smaller or more relevant. Selective reading and trimming address what enters the context; caching addresses the processing cost of a matching repeated prefix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Claude Projects RAG is a separate product feature
Claude Help Center documentation describes automatic RAG for project knowledge uploaded to Claude Projects on paid plans: Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. When project knowledge approaches or exceeds context limits, Claude can use a project-knowledge search tool to retrieve relevant uploaded material. The Help Center claims this can support up to 10 times more project knowledge while maintaining response quality; the claim applies to Claude Projects, not a Claude Code benchmark or a description of Claude Code internals.

That example shows Anthropic offers a retrieval feature in one product context. It does not demonstrate that Claude Code uses the same architecture, nor does it prove that Claude Code never uses retrieval-like mechanisms.
When should a coding agent use retrieval?
For a particular workflow, compare the ongoing costs and likely quality of the options rather than assuming that either full context or RAG always wins.
- How much context does the task actually need? A change confined to a known function may be served by selective file access; a cross-cutting investigation may need evidence from many areas.
- How much irrelevant material would otherwise be carried? Retrieval can help narrow a large collection, provided it finds the right passages.
- Will context repeat across turns? Stable prefixes may benefit from caching; changing early prompt content can reduce reuse.
- How often does the source material change? A frequently changing repository makes index freshness and maintenance more consequential.
- What are the quality and operational tradeoffs? Include retrieval accuracy, latency, setup and upkeep, and the risk of omitting a needed file—not just input-token cost.
Anthropic’s published evidence supports the importance of repeated context, cache behavior, and selective file access. It does not establish a universal repository-size threshold, a controlled Claude Code-versus-RAG comparison, or a single architecture that is cheapest for every task.
