These seven options serve different workflows, and a sync is not automatically a protected backup: check how each handles deletions, versions, and restores before trusting it with important files.
How to choose a free file-sync tool
Synchronization copies changes between locations. Depending on its mode, it may also propagate deletions or overwrite another copy. That is useful when you want locations to match, but risky if you expect a deleted or overwritten file to remain recoverable. A backup workflow should offer a way to restore files, and ideally preserve older versions separately from the live synced copy.
- Choose folder comparison if you want to review differences and decide when to run a local sync.
- Choose device-to-device sync if you want files to update continuously across computers you manage.
- Choose scheduled backup software if you want recurring jobs and a restore workflow on Windows.
- Choose a cloud-focused tool if you need to work with cloud storage, especially from the command line.
- Choose cloud storage with a sync client if straightforward access across devices matters more than configuring arbitrary folder pairs.
Free plans and platform support vary. Confirm the current limits and compatibility for your operating system and destination before setting up a workflow.
Seven free options by workflow
1. FreeFileSync: hands-on folder comparison
FreeFileSync is a graphical choice for comparing and synchronizing folders on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its project describes it as software that “creates and manages backup copies of all your important files”; that is the vendor’s description, not an independent assessment. The tool offers mirror, two-way, and custom synchronization modes, so choose carefully: a mirror is intended to make one side match the other, while two-way sync propagates changes in both directions.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
The quick-start workflow is to choose left and right folders, compare them, set the synchronization behavior, inspect the preview, and then run the sync. Reviewing that preview is especially important before the first run or after changing modes. The official download page lists FreeFileSync 14.12, released September 9, 2026. See the FreeFileSync project, its quick-start manual, download page, and platform information.
2. Syncthing: continuous sync between your devices
Syncthing is designed for continuous file synchronization between computers without a central server storing users’ data. You provide and manage the devices and their storage. The project says communication uses TLS; devices are identified by cryptographic certificates and must be approved to connect. It works across major desktop operating systems and can sync over a local network or the internet.
This makes Syncthing a fit when you want your own devices to exchange updates in the background, rather than upload everything to a conventional centralized storage account. Its project page calls it “a continuous file synchronization program.” Read the Syncthing project page for current platform and setup details.

3. Resilio Sync: peer-to-peer sharing and selective sync
Resilio Sync’s personal product is built around peer-to-peer synchronization and sharing. Its current page advertises a free download and features including selective sync, direct file sending, folder permissions, and bandwidth controls. The page also says Sync Pro features are now available in the free download, so older descriptions of a separate paid-only Pro tier may no longer reflect the current offer. Check the product page for the current feature set and terms before relying on a particular capability: Resilio Sync.

4. SyncBackFree: scheduled Windows backup jobs
SyncBackFree is a basic free backup option for Windows. 2BrightSparks lists backup and mirror, two-way sync, restore, and scheduled backups. Its compatibility list includes Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, and Vista; Windows Server is not supported. The vendor distinguishes the free edition from paid SyncBackSE and Pro. Versioning is presented for SyncBackSE, so do not assume it is included in SyncBackFree.
For a Windows user who wants recurring profiles and a restore option, this is a more direct fit than a tool centered on manual folder comparisons. Check the SyncBackFree product page for edition details and current compatibility.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
5. GoodSync Free: broad destinations, strict caps
GoodSync supports backup and one-way or two-way synchronization, with documented local, NAS, and cloud destinations. Its free-versus-paid page lists a maximum of three jobs and 100 files per installation for GoodSync Free. Those limits can rule it out for a large library or several separate workflows even if the destinations are suitable.
GoodSync describes version history as a feature, but check the current edition terms and configuration before relying on it for recovery. See the vendor’s product information and free and paid plan details.

Rclone is a command-line file-management tool for cloud services; its project says it supports more than 70 cloud storage products. Documented operations include backup and restore, one-way sync, two-way bisync, mounting storage, and checksum checking. It is flexible for people comfortable with terminal commands, but its command-line focus makes it a steeper starting point than a graphical folder-sync utility.

Review the rclone project site and its documentation for the exact cloud service and operation you plan to use. The number of supported services is the project’s stated coverage, not a guarantee that every service offers identical features.
7. Microsoft OneDrive: straightforward cloud storage and access
Microsoft lists 5 GB of OneDrive storage in its free Microsoft 365 offering and names support for PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android. It describes photo and file backup across devices. OneDrive is cloud storage with a sync client, rather than a general-purpose utility for configuring arbitrary source and target folders on local drives or network storage.
It is a practical option if your priority is keeping files available through a cloud account on supported devices, within the listed storage allowance. Check Microsoft’s OneDrive page for current plan and platform details.

Make sync safer for important files
Decide whether you need sync, backup, or both
Use sync when you want changes to propagate between working locations. For backup, make sure you can restore a file after accidental deletion or overwrite. If you use a mirror or continuous sync as your only copy, a mistake may be propagated instead of preserved as a recoverable earlier version.
Check deletion, conflict, and version behavior
- Find out whether deleting a file on one side deletes it on the other.
- Check what happens when the same file changes in two locations before they sync.
- Confirm whether older versions are retained, for how long, and whether the feature is included in the edition you use.
- Locate and test the restore process with a nonessential file before depending on it.
Choose a destination you control
An external drive can be a local backup destination; a NAS can provide shared network storage. These are destination categories, not guarantees of a particular capacity, speed, or reliability. GoodSync lists local storage and NAS destinations, while FreeFileSync supports folder pairs. For an off-site copy, GoodSync and rclone document cloud destinations; verify that the exact provider, plan, and operations you need are supported.
Quick Recap
Start with a small, observable job
- Select a test folder with a few nonessential files and a destination that you can inspect.
- Configure the intended mode: one-way, mirror, two-way, or backup profile, depending on the tool.
- Review the comparison or job preview where available, paying attention to proposed deletions and overwrites.
- Run the test, then verify that expected files arrived and that restore or version-history behavior works as intended.
- Only then expand the job to important folders and enable scheduling or continuous synchronization.
