Five VPNs worth checking for a Fire TV Stick are ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN and IPVanish. They are candidates, not a proven top five: the available comparisons use different methods and do not establish that exactly five VPNs work well across every Fire TV device. Before subscribing, check your Stick’s operating system and confirm that the provider offers a compatible app for it.
Why “best VPN for Firestick” depends on your device
“Firestick” does not identify a single operating system or compatibility level. Many Fire TV devices use Android-based Fire OS; newer generations include devices running Linux-based Vega OS. Amazon describes Fire OS as a fork of Android, but that statement does not apply to Vega OS. App availability, installation options and compatibility can therefore differ by model and OS.
Compatibility also does not guarantee that a VPN app will be easy to navigate with the Fire TV remote, that a particular streaming service or title will play, or that your connection will be fast and stable. Streaming access can change, and a VPN provider’s claims are not a guarantee of access to a specific catalog.
Five VPNs to consider
The services below appear in Fire TV comparison coverage or provider documentation. This is a shortlist for checking against your device, not a ranking based on one shared test. Security.org says it tested more than 50 VPN providers over approximately six months in 2026 and conducted more than 300 speed tests, with results verified by six third-party data privacy experts. Those are Security.org’s descriptions of its process; they are not tests of these services under a common set of conditions for this article.

| VPN | What the cited coverage establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| ExpressVPN | Appears in Fire TV recommendations. Its support documentation describes apps and setup for Fire OS 6+ and Vega OS. | Confirm your exact device and OS are covered, and follow the instructions for that OS. App availability and streaming access can change. |
| NordVPN | Appears in Fire TV recommendations, and NordVPN documents support for Amazon Fire devices and app settings. | Check the specific model: NordVPN says the first-generation Fire TV Stick does not allow VPN connections and some older Fire devices run Android versions too old for its app. The cited material does not establish Vega OS support. |
| Surfshark | Appears in Fire TV comparisons. Security.org reports Vega OS compatibility. | Verify current app-store availability and support for your model and OS. |
| Proton VPN | Proton’s support documentation describes its Android app for older Fire OS devices. A September 2026 TechRadar report says Proton released a Vega OS app. | Check the current provider listing for your OS rather than assuming the Android app or Vega app covers every Fire TV device. |
| IPVanish | Appears in comparison coverage, and one source reports Vega OS compatibility. | Confirm compatibility in IPVanish’s current support documentation and app listing before subscribing. |
Independent comparison publishers may recommend different services because they use different devices, test conditions and criteria. Security.org says it considered security, speed, price, Fire TV compatibility and streaming access; TechRadar describes daily use across services and proprietary tests. Those descriptions do not make their rankings directly comparable. No common test here establishes a reliable speed or price winner, and subscription prices and discounts change.
Check compatibility before installing or subscribing
- Identify the device and software. Find your Fire TV model and check its software version in the device’s settings. Do not rely on the “Firestick” name alone.
- Determine whether it runs Fire OS or Vega OS. Use the provider’s instructions for that operating system. Amazon’s description of Fire OS as Android-based should not be applied to Vega OS.
- Check the provider’s current app listing and support page. Prefer an official TV app when one is available. Confirm that the exact model or OS is supported before paying; app availability changes over time.
- Choose an installation method supported by that OS. On Fire OS, ExpressVPN describes installation through the Amazon Appstore and an APK sideload alternative. Security.org says APK sideloading does not work on Linux-based Vega OS, so Fire OS sideloading instructions are not a Vega OS workaround.
- Test the app with your remote and your own streaming apps. Confirm you can navigate the VPN app, connect to a server and use the services you care about. Results for a particular service or title are not guaranteed.
If a provider’s app is missing, do not assume that an Android APK will work on your device. Recheck the OS and the provider’s device-specific instructions; the cited support guidance identifies both very old Fire devices and the first-generation Stick as potential compatibility limits.

How to choose among the five
- For the clearest documented OS coverage in this shortlist: ExpressVPN’s support page describes both Fire OS 6+ and Vega OS routes. Verify your model against its current instructions.
- For an older Fire TV device: Check the provider’s minimum OS requirements and model exclusions before subscribing. NordVPN specifically flags the first-generation Fire TV Stick and some older devices.
- For Vega OS: Check current provider documentation and the Amazon Appstore listing. The cited material reports support for ExpressVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN and IPVanish, but availability is evolving and the evidence is not equally detailed for each provider.
- For speed, privacy or price: Compare current plans, protocols, privacy information and any relevant test results directly. The available publisher tests do not support a single apples-to-apples speed or price ranking, and no one service is established here as best for every reader.
