Before accepting an agent’s “tests passed” summary, ask for the exact command it ran, the test runner’s actual output, and the process exit code. Then check whether that command covered the tests your change needed. A green status line alone does not establish that tests were collected—or that the relevant suite ran.
What to ask for when an agent says the tests passed
Request the evidence in a form you can verify, not another paraphrase of the result:
- Command: The literal command line, including filters, flags, and shell operators.
- Output: The runner’s actual output. Look for collection and pass, failure, or skip counts when the runner provides them.
- Exit status: The process exit code after the command completed.
Also establish whether the command ran after the relevant code edits and whether it covered the changed code. A passing result from an old run or a narrow test filter does not demonstrate that the current change passed the intended suite.
How a “pass” can hide missing or misleading test evidence
The command was unavailable or guessed
An agent may report that there were no test failures even though it guessed the command incorrectly or the command was not found. In that case, the intended test runner may not have started at all. The command and output reveal whether execution happened; a summary sentence does not.

The runner was allowed to pass with no tests
Some test-runner options permit an empty test collection to exit successfully. That can be appropriate in a repository or workflow where no tests are expected, but it should not silently substitute for required verification. Check whether tests were collected and whether the repository’s intended command allows an empty collection.
A shell operator masked a failure
A command such as pytest || true returns success from the shell even when pytest fails. That makes the outer command’s status insufficient on its own: inspect the literal command and pytest output as well. More generally, shell operators and wrappers can alter how an underlying test process’s result is reported.

Read pytest exit codes with the output
According to the pytest exit-code documentation, exit code 0 means all tests were collected and passed successfully; exit code 5 means no tests were collected. Other nonzero codes distinguish outcomes such as test failures, interruption, internal errors, usage errors, and excessive warnings.
So a pytest code 0 is useful evidence, but interpret it alongside the exact command and output. A filter may have selected only a small subset, and an option or shell construct may affect what the result means. Code 5 is not a passing test run: it indicates that pytest collected no tests.

Check that the run covered the change
Execution evidence answers whether a process ran and what it reported. It does not, by itself, show that the right tests were run. Compare the command with the repository’s documented test instructions and the files or behaviors changed:
- Does the command match the repository’s normal test command, or is it a limited filter?
- Do the output’s collection and result counts fit the expected scope?
- Did the successful run happen after the relevant edits?
- Were required suites, integration checks, or other relevant tests omitted?
A targeted test can be useful evidence for a targeted behavior; it should not be described as proof that the full suite passed unless the full suite actually ran.

Make verification easier to audit
Record the repository’s real commands
Write the exact test and lint commands in the repository’s agent-facing instructions. That reduces guesswork and gives reviewers a clear basis for checking what the agent ran. For example, teams using Claude Code may document commands in CLAUDE.md and configure permissions for the appropriate commands. Treat that as a tool-specific example: adapt instructions and permissions to your agent harness and repository.
Preserve output and enforce evidence in CI
Keep test output with the change or in an appropriate CI artifact. CI can require that verification evidence exists and corresponds to the claim being made. The Scale100 register distinguishes whether a check happened from whether it was meaningful, and describes committed evidence and CI comparison as controls for machine-checkable claims. A saved log or green CI job still cannot prove that every important behavior is adequately tested.

Use hooks cautiously
A pre-command hook can block known risky patterns, such as selected no-tests options or error-masking constructs. Any hook should be tailored to the runner, shell, and repository: a rule that catches one form may miss another, and a blanket restriction may block legitimate workflows. Hooks are a guardrail, not a replacement for reviewing the command and its results.
Execution evidence is not the same as test quality
Once you establish that tests ran, ask a separate question: would these tests detect a meaningful defect in the changed behavior? A test suite may pass while missing the behavior that matters. Where practical, retain and compare relevant test artifacts, and review whether the test cases exercise the changed code and distinguish correct behavior from plausible incorrect behavior. This is a quality judgment, not something an exit code can settle.
Keep the two claims separate: evidence that a command ran supports an execution claim; evidence that the checks adequately cover the change supports a confidence claim. Neither should be inferred from the other.
