Industry digitalization in automobiles is the integration of software, connectivity, artificial intelligence, data and digital platforms across vehicles and the businesses that develop, build and support them. It includes software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and over-the-air updates, but also changes to manufacturing, supply chains, development processes and collaboration between automakers, suppliers and technology companies. It is an ongoing transition—not a single product rollout or a change that has reached every company and factory equally.

What does digitalization in the automotive industry mean?

Automotive digitalization applies digital technologies to both the vehicle and the industrial system around it. In the vehicle, software can control or update functions over time, while connectivity and cloud platforms can support services and exchanges of data. Across the business, digital tools can affect product development, manufacturing, supplier coordination and after-sales support.

A software-defined vehicle is one designed so that software plays a central role in its functions and can be developed or updated during the vehicle’s life. That does not mean the vehicle is only software: its capabilities still depend on hardware, software integration and the organizations able to maintain them.

Digitalization, electrification and automation are related but distinct changes. The European Commission’s 2025 Automotive Action Plan says one out of five cars sold globally in 2024 was electric. That figure describes electrification, not the share of digitally enabled vehicles.

How is digital technology changing vehicles?

Software platforms and updates

With an SDV approach, manufacturers can develop software functions over time rather than treating every vehicle’s original configuration as fixed. Over-the-air (OTA) updates can deliver software changes remotely. Deloitte’s 2024 study describes cloud-based operating platforms and OTA updates as increasingly standard industry direction, while the European Commission’s 2025 plan identifies software, chips and AI as important components of future connected and automated vehicles. These descriptions indicate strategic priorities; they do not establish that every automaker or vehicle already supports the same capabilities.

Connected services and AI

Connectivity can link vehicles with cloud services and support digital features or customer services. Automakers are also prioritizing AI and machine learning, according to Deloitte’s executive study. Such technologies may enable new or personalized experiences, but their usefulness depends on integration with vehicle systems and ongoing software work—not simply adding a feature with an AI label.

Subscriptions, digital services and data-based offerings are potential business opportunities. They are not guaranteed revenue streams: the evidence here describes expectations and possibilities, not proof that every service will attract customers or become profitable.

How does digitalization change automotive operations?

The transition extends beyond what a driver sees. Digital tools and platforms can affect manufacturing systems, supply chains, product development and the skills needed to build and maintain vehicles. These changes also reach across company boundaries: automakers, Tier 1 suppliers and semiconductor companies are adapting portfolios, development processes and business models for SDVs, according to SAE International’s 2024 report description.

The World Economic Forum’s 2024 publication, Advancing Industry Collaboration in Vehicle Software, calls for more streamlined collaboration on vehicle software platforms. Together, these industry accounts point to coordination as a central execution issue, but they do not establish one standard operating model or a single best architecture.

For India, the Confederation of Indian Industry’s 2025 listing describes a publication examining Industry 4.0 adoption, smart manufacturing, digital transformation and innovation in the automotive sector. The listing does not provide comparable adoption statistics, so it cannot support a ranking of India against other regions.

What benefits are possible—and what is not yet established?

Digitalization can create ways to improve vehicle functions through software updates, offer new customer experiences, support operational efficiency and develop digital-service or data-related revenue. These are potential benefits, not automatic outcomes. The cited evidence does not demonstrate that digitalization necessarily lowers costs, makes vehicles safer or makes subscriptions profitable.

Expectations about data revenue illustrate the distinction between opportunity and result. Deloitte reports that 81% of surveyed OEMs expect significant returns from data monetization within the next five years. This is a forecast by executives, not a measure of returns already achieved by manufacturers.

What do the available figures say about adoption?

Deloitte published its Software-defined vehicles: Global manufacturer readiness study on 24 October 2024. It interviewed more than 160 OEM executives in Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain, the United States, Japan and South Korea. The results below describe those surveyed executives and their organizations; they are not a census of all automotive companies or a global measure of factory digitization.

Finding What it means
Over 90% reported active adoption of SDV technology. Executive-reported adoption among Deloitte’s surveyed OEMs; not the share of all global automakers.
69% reported centralized decision-making for SDV strategies. A finding about how surveyed OEMs organize SDV decisions, not evidence that centralization is universally preferable.
Nearly 90% of technical leaders, versus 45% of business executives, expressed confidence in their company’s SDV leadership. A difference in reported confidence, not a measured difference in technical capability.
Up to US$3 billion per company was described as allocated to R&D. Deloitte’s description of investment allocation, not a universal average or an audited figure for every OEM.

The European Commission’s 2025 Automotive Action Plan says European vehicle manufacturers and suppliers account for 45% of global automotive R&D investment. This is a regional industry-policy assessment, not a measure of digitalization adoption. The Commission frames software-enabled, AI-powered connected and autonomous vehicles as important to Europe’s future competitiveness; its stated policy ambitions should not be mistaken for completed actions or outcomes.

There is no comparable global measure in these sources for factory-level digitalization across regions and plant types. Deloitte’s executive survey, the Commission’s Europe-focused policy assessment and industry publications answer different questions and should not be combined into a single adoption ranking.

  • Architecture and integration: How do software platforms connect with vehicle hardware, suppliers, cloud services and existing operations?
  • Security and data governance: What capabilities and partnerships will protect systems and govern vehicle data? The cited sources identify these as strategic concerns but do not provide a detailed compliance checklist.
  • Organizational readiness: Do technical, commercial and business teams agree on priorities, ownership and execution?
  • Regional context: How do local market conditions, industrial policy and regulations shape the implementation? The European Commission’s plan concerns Europe, while Deloitte’s survey covers eight named markets.
  • Evidence maturity: Is a claim based on an observed survey response, an official policy position, a forecast or an industry opportunity statement?

Why is collaboration a central challenge?

Vehicle software depends on components and expertise that cross organizational boundaries. Automakers, suppliers and semiconductor firms may need to align product plans, development processes and platforms while preserving the ability to integrate and maintain the resulting systems. The World Economic Forum’s call for streamlined collaboration and SAE International’s account of changing business models describe this ecosystem challenge; neither establishes a universally accepted solution.

Leadership alignment also matters. Deloitte’s marked gap between technical and business executives’ confidence suggests that agreement about an SDV strategy cannot be assumed simply because technical teams are active. Confidence is not a direct measure of readiness, but the difference makes coordination between technical and commercial decision-makers a useful issue for companies to examine.

What is the broader significance of the transition?

The World Economic Forum’s 2024 publication characterizes the shift as “the automotive industry’s most challenging transformation in over a century.” That is the report’s framing rather than a measured statistic. The European Commission similarly presents the move toward software-enabled, AI-powered connected and autonomous vehicles as a competitiveness priority for Europe. These perspectives underscore that digitalization is both a product and industrial strategy: software capability, organizational execution and cooperation across the supply chain all matter.
