The next major meteor shower as of October 4, 2026, is the Orionids, peaking on the night of October 21–22. The Geminids on December 13–14 are the standout upcoming option for many observers: they are usually the year’s strongest shower, and the constellation Gemini is well placed from about 10 p.m. Exact visibility depends on your location, the Moon, weather, and how dark your sky is—not just the peak date.

Upcoming meteor shower peaks from October 2026

These dates and Moon conditions come from the American Meteor Society’s 2026/2027 calendar, checked October 4, 2026. Peak nights are not guarantees of clear skies or a particular personal count. For the best local hours, also check when the Moon is above your horizon and the local forecast.

Shower Peak night Active period What to expect
Orionids October 21–22, 2026 October 2–November 7, 2026 The Moon is 74% illuminated and may hide fainter meteors while above the horizon. In a normal year, the shower produces 10–20 members per hour at maximum.
Southern Taurids November 4–5, 2026 September 20–November 20, 2026 Described by the AMS as fireball-rich; the Moon is 25% illuminated on peak night.
Northern Taurids November 11–12, 2026 October 20–December 10, 2026 The Moon is 4% illuminated. Overlapping Taurid activity can sometimes increase fireball reports.
Leonids November 16–17, 2026 November 6–30, 2026 The Moon is 39% illuminated and may hide fainter meteors. Exceptional Leonid storms are rare, not the expected display.
Geminids December 13–14, 2026 December 4–17, 2026 Usually the strongest shower of the year. The Moon is 15% illuminated, and Gemini is well placed from about 10 p.m., making this a good choice for observers who cannot stay up until dawn.
Ursids December 21–22, 2026 December 17–26, 2026 A Northern Hemisphere shower, typically about 5–10 meteors per hour near maximum. The 89%-illuminated Moon is expected to interfere.
Quadrantids January 3–4, 2027 December 28, 2026–January 12, 2027 The maximum is brief—about six hours. The AMS predicts a peak near 03:30 UT on January 4, favoring Europe and western Asia. The Moon is 18% illuminated.
Lyrids April 21–22, 2027 April 14–30, 2027 The Moon is full on peak night and is likely to obscure fainter meteors.
Eta Aquariids May 5–6, 2027 April 19–May 28, 2027 The Moon is 2% illuminated. The shower is stronger from southern tropical latitudes; north of the equator, the AMS gives typical rates of 10–30 per hour just before dawn.
Southern Delta Aquariids July 30–31, 2027 July 12–August 23, 2027 Usually faint and better placed in the southern tropics. The Moon is 14% illuminated.
Perseids August 12–13, 2027 July 17–August 24, 2027 A popular Northern Hemisphere shower. The AMS gives a typical maximum of 30–50 shower members per hour from rural locations; the 79%-illuminated Moon may hide fainter meteors.

Dates and lunar conditions in this table are specific to the 2026/2027 calendar and can change from year to year. Check the American Meteor Society calendar or the International Meteor Organization calendar again near the night you plan to observe.

Major annual showers by calendar-year 2026 peak date

The AMS calendar’s 2026 list gives the following active periods and peak dates. The date is a useful planning guide, not a promise of the best local hour. The time listed in the annual table indicates when the shower’s radiant is best positioned; actual viewing also depends on darkness, Moon position, and location.

How to choose the best time and place

Prioritize a dark sky and the Moon’s position

Get as far from artificial lighting as is practical and choose a location with a wide, unobstructed view. Dark skies make fainter meteors easier to see. Bright moonlight can wash them out, so check moonrise and moonset for your location. If the Moon is up, try to position yourself so you are looking away from its glare.

Use a broad view of the sky

Meteors can streak across any part of the sky, so you do not need to stare at the radiant—the apparent point from which a shower’s meteors seem to originate. NASA JPL advises against using binoculars or a telescope for casual meteor watching: their narrow fields of view show less sky. Use your unaided eyes instead.

Allow time for darkness and for meteors to appear

NASA’s 2026 Perseid guidance recommends giving your eyes 20–30 minutes to adapt to the dark. Avoid bright phone screens; if you need a light, NASA JPL recommends red light. Plan to stay at least half an hour, because meteors do not arrive on a schedule.

Make the session comfortable

Bring layers for overnight temperatures and consider a reclining chair or ground pad, blanket, or sleeping bag so you can look upward without straining. NASA JPL puts it simply: “A reclining chair or ground pad will make it far more comfortable to keep your gaze on the night sky.” See NASA JPL’s meteor-watching advice.

What hourly meteor rates really mean

Published rates describe expected shower activity under stated observing conditions; they are not a guaranteed count for one person. The AMS’s 2026/2027 calendar gives the Perseids a typical maximum of 30–50 shower members per hour from rural locations, Orionids 10–20 per hour in a normal year, and Eta Aquariids 10–30 per hour north of the equator just before dawn. For the Ursids, it gives about 5–10 per hour during late-morning hours on the maximum date.
