The U.S. Space Force (USSF) is a distinct branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, established on December 20, 2019, to secure the nation’s interests in, from, and to space. It is organized under the Department of the Air Force, alongside the U.S. Air Force. Its military and civilian members are called Guardians.
What does the U.S. Space Force do?
The Space Force’s mission is to “Secure our Nation’s Interests In, From, And To Space.” Those three words describe connected parts of its work: protecting the nation and joint force from space-related threats, operating space-enabled military capabilities, and maintaining access to space. The service says it organizes, trains, and equips forces and operates and defends space systems. U.S. Space Force: Mission
In space: protect and defend
“In” space includes space-superiority activities intended to protect the joint force and the nation from threats involving space and counterspace capabilities. In practical terms, this is the defensive and operational work needed to keep U.S. space capabilities usable in a contested environment.
From space: deliver mission effects
“From” space refers to global mission operations such as satellite communications, positioning, navigation and timing, and missile warning. These capabilities support military operations on Earth and beyond; this does not mean the Space Force owns or operates every satellite service people use.

Why was the Space Force created?
Congress established the Space Force on December 20, 2019, when the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2020 was signed into law. The service’s official history says its creation reflected recognition that space had become a national-security imperative and that the military needed a service dedicated to the space domain. U.S. Space Force: History
Space capabilities also support everyday civilian activity. The Space Force’s history points to satellite communications, weather monitoring, television broadcasting, and GPS timing and navigation as examples of services that depend on space capabilities. These examples describe the broader importance of space systems, not a claim that the Space Force provides or controls all such services.
Is the Space Force part of the Air Force?
No. The Space Force is a separate and distinct armed service, but it is organized within the Department of the Air Force. The U.S. Air Force is also in that department. The arrangement is comparable to the Marine Corps’ placement within the Department of the Navy: a distinct service within a shared department. Space Force headquarters is at the Pentagon. “Guardian” is the name for military and civilian members of the U.S. Space Force. The service’s organization page reported more than 14,000 military and civilian Guardians as of fiscal year 2023. That is a dated official figure, not a verified 2026 headcount. U.S. Space Force: Organization
How does the Space Force differ from other military services?
The Space Force is distinguished by its focus on military activity in, from, and to space. Like other armed services, it organizes, trains, and equips forces; its particular responsibility is the space domain and the systems and infrastructure that support space operations. It is not a civilian space agency: its mission is military, and its service structure sits within the Department of the Air Force.
