For a decorative display, plan the LED array around the LEDs’ datasheet and your chosen power supply, then test the complete circuit before fitting it into the tubes. A 2012 MAKE example used 20 red LEDs and a 9-volt supply to illuminate five tubes, with four LEDs per tube; its layout is a starting point, not a universal wiring specification.
Plan the array before wiring
Decide how many tubes you want to illuminate, how many LEDs will go in each tube, and what supply voltage you intend to use. Those choices determine the array layout and resistor calculations.
In Michael Colombo’s 2012 MAKE advice column, the example is a 4-by-5 array of 20 red LEDs: four LEDs for each of five tubes, powered from 9 volts. Treat those figures as that project’s configuration, not as a guarantee that the same arrangement suits different LEDs or supplies.
Calculate resistors from your LED datasheet
Use the datasheet for the specific LEDs you choose. Find their forward-voltage and current values, then calculate the array and its resistors for the supply voltage and arrangement you selected. The MAKE column recommends this approach but does not provide resistor values in the text available here, so there is no universal resistor value to copy.

LED color and package are also design choices, not proven performance rankings. The MAKE example uses red LEDs; a separate Instructables build describes white surface-mount LEDs or standard T1/T1-1/2 LEDs. Check the candidate LED’s datasheet, whether it physically fits your tube, and the appearance you want before settling on the circuit.
Assemble and check the circuit
- Lay out the full array outside the tubes. Assemble the LEDs and calculated resistors in the intended arrangement so you can inspect and test the circuit before installation.
- Observe LED polarity. In the MAKE guidance, the longer lead is positive and the shorter lead is negative. Confirm the leads before connecting power.
- Check the supply leads. Colombo advises using a multimeter to verify the power supply’s polarity rather than relying on wire color or assumption.
- Test before installing. The column suggests a 9-volt battery as a testing option for its relatively low-powered example and a 9-volt wall supply for the completed circuit. These are the article’s project-specific suggestions, not a specification for every LED array.
- Install only after the circuit works. Once the complete array has been tested, fit the LEDs into the tubes, preserving the planned polarity and arrangement.
Keep the project decorative
This approach is for adding an LED display effect to salvaged vacuum tubes. The cited instructions address lighting LEDs, not powering or restoring tubes as functioning electronic components.
