Which free image search engine should you use?

How to find and verify images you can use
- Choose a search route. Use Google Images or Bing Images for broad discovery. Try Openverse or Wikimedia Commons when you want results associated with open licenses or public-domain status. For stock-style photography, search Unsplash or Pexels; for community photography, try Flickr.
- Open the image’s original page. A result thumbnail or usage-rights label is only a lead. Follow it to the host, creator, or file page where the actual terms are stated.
- Match the license to your use. Check whether your use is commercial, whether you will crop or otherwise modify the image, whether attribution is required, and whether a share-alike or no-derivatives condition applies.
- Save the details. Record the image source, creator, license name and link, access date, any required attribution wording, and a copy or record of the terms shown when you obtained it. This is prudent documentation, not a recordkeeping requirement imposed by every service.
- Check context-specific rights. A photo license may not settle questions involving recognizable people, trademarks, or depicted property. Consider the planned use and seek appropriate permission or advice if those rights are material.
1. Google Images: broad discovery with usage-rights filtering
Google Images is a practical first stop when you can describe the subject in ordinary keywords and want broad web coverage. Its Usage rights filter narrows results to images carrying license information, and a selected result may provide a License details link. Neither the filter nor the label independently validates permission: Google says the information comes from image hosts or providers and advises checking exact terms with those sources. Google Search Help also notes that Creative Commons terms may require credit or restrict commercial use or modifications.
Best fit: broad searches and a starting point for finding license information. Confirm the original page’s terms before reuse.
2. Bing Images: another broad-search route
Bing Images is worth trying when a broad query needs another result set. An independent comparison describes keyword and license filters, but current official guidance for its precise license workflow is not established here. Treat any filter as a discovery aid, then open the original publisher’s page and verify the terms that apply to the specific image.

Best fit: a second broad search, not legal clearance.
3. Openverse: Creative Commons and public-domain discovery
Openverse searches collections for images and other media offered under Creative Commons licenses or in the public domain. Creative Commons recommends it for image searches and describes its content as CC-licensed or public domain in its OER photo and image search guidance. Follow each result to its original work and confirm the creator, license version, attribution requirements, commercial-use permission, and whether adaptations are permitted.

Best fit: finding work with an identifiable open license or public-domain status. The individual work’s terms still matter.
4. Wikimedia Commons: file-level details for historical and educational material
Wikimedia Commons is often useful for historical photographs, maps, diagrams, and educational material. Its individual file pages provide descriptions and licensing information; use that page to establish the file’s source, author, and status rather than assuming every item is unrestricted. Check whether the file is public domain or under a specific free license, and whether attribution, share-alike obligations, or rights beyond copyright apply to your intended use.

Best fit: reference and educational imagery when the specific file page documents its status.
5. Flickr: community photography with varied rights
Flickr can surface distinctive community-contributed photographs and offers license filtering, but its catalog is not uniformly free to reuse. A photo may have a Creative Commons license with conditions or be marked All Rights Reserved. Inspect the individual photo page and check the exact permissions for commercial use and edits, along with attribution, no-derivatives, or share-alike terms where applicable.

Best fit: specific community photography when the creator’s page and license are clear.

Unsplash says its images can be downloaded and used for commercial and noncommercial purposes without permission or required attribution under its license. The license prohibits selling images without significant modification and compiling images to create a similar or competing service. Giving photographer credit when practical is still a considerate choice. For use involving recognizable people, brands, or property, assess any context-specific rights as well as the image license.

Best fit: contemporary stock-style photos under a straightforward service license.
7. Pexels: another curated photo-library option
Pexels is another place to search when a curated photo library may turn up a suitable image. The detailed current license terms are not established here, so check Pexels’ own guidance and the asset’s page before using or adapting an image; do not assume all results have identical terms.
Best fit: an additional stock-library search when other routes have not found the right photo.
Broad search or license-focused search?
- For breadth: Google Images and Bing Images search broadly across the web. That can help surface many subjects, but requires careful verification of the original source and rights.
- For open-license discovery: Openverse and Wikimedia Commons focus more directly on material identified as openly licensed or public domain. Still check the specific work or file page.
- For stock-style convenience: Unsplash and Pexels offer a curated library experience. Read the applicable service terms and check context-specific rights.
- For varied creator licensing: Flickr, Openverse, and Commons include work with different creators and conditions. Confirm the individual item’s terms rather than relying on the service name.
The most useful distinction is not simply which service has the most results. Broad search may find more kinds of material; a license-focused collection may make rights status easier to investigate. In either case, “free” does not by itself tell you whether commercial use, attribution, edits, or redistribution are allowed.
