If VLC takes unusually long to open, Microsoft Defender interfering with VLC’s plugin cache is one reported cause—not a confirmed explanation for every slow launch. Start with VLC’s reported cache repair, then use Microsoft’s diagnostic guidance to check Defender before considering a narrowly scoped exclusion. Do not turn off real-time protection as a routine fix.

What may be causing VLC to start slowly

In August 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that VLC developers attributed some lengthy VLC startup or playback delays to Microsoft Defender interfering with VLC’s plugin cache. VLC may spend time processing its plugin system before playback begins. This attribution was reported secondhand; it was not an incident-specific Microsoft advisory. Tom’s Hardware also said its own Windows 11 test did not reproduce the delay. The available sources do not establish which Windows or Defender builds are affected, or confirm an incident-specific fix from Microsoft or VideoLAN.

The report’s headline refers to a possible delay of up to 33 seconds, not a typical result or evidence of how many users are affected. Descriptions such as “VLC takes 10 seconds to open” are user phrasing, not prevalence data.

Try VLC’s reported cache repair first

Tom’s Hardware reports that regenerating VLC’s plugin cache—or reinstalling VLC—may resolve the problem. It identifies vlc-cache-gen.exe and a Start menu reset shortcut as repair routes. The report does not establish that either is a permanent fix, and a reset may remove customized preferences such as audio settings, keyboard shortcuts, and subtitle choices.

  1. Record preferences you want to keep. Note or back up relevant VLC settings before using a reset route; the reported reset may remove them.
  2. Use the reported VLC repair route. Regenerate the plugin cache with vlc-cache-gen.exe or use the VLC reset shortcut in the Start menu. Exact menu wording can vary; the report does not provide a universal path.
  3. Reopen VLC and compare. Check whether it is faster when opened by itself and when opening a media file. If it remains slow, proceed to Defender diagnostics rather than assuming the cause.

The report also lists reinstalling VLC as a possible workaround. Treat that as a software repair option, not proof that Defender is responsible.

Check whether Defender contributes

Microsoft’s general guidance for investigating slow applications is to use the Microsoft Defender Antivirus performance analyzer to identify affected paths and processes, then test whether real-time scanning is contributing. That guidance is a general troubleshooting method; it does not confirm the VLC-specific incident.

  1. Run the performance analyzer. Follow Microsoft’s Defender Antivirus performance analyzer guidance to inspect paths and processes associated with the slowdown.
  2. Compare performance during a controlled test. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance describes checking whether real-time protection contributes to high Defender CPU use. If you test this, keep it brief, avoid opening untrusted files, and restore protection immediately afterward. A change in speed is evidence to investigate, not by itself a permanent diagnosis.
  3. Restore protection and assess the evidence. If the analyzer and comparison support Defender as a factor, consider only a narrowly scoped exclusion. Microsoft advises: “Only keep an exclusion if testing confirms that it’s necessary.” See its slow-application and performance troubleshooting guidance.

Use an exclusion only when testing supports it

Microsoft Defender exclusions can apply to a file, folder, file type, or process. Excluded content may no longer be checked for threats, so an exclusion creates a protection gap. Microsoft warns that a process exclusion can have broader consequences for files opened by that process; using a full path can reduce ambiguity. Details are in Microsoft’s guidance on configuring Microsoft Defender Antivirus exclusions.

  • Choose the smallest target supported by the diagnostic evidence rather than excluding broad folders or locations.
  • Avoid a process-wide exclusion unless the evidence warrants its broader scope.
  • Remove an exclusion if testing no longer shows that it is needed, and retest after VLC or Defender updates.

What is and is not confirmed

The VLC cache explanation and repair options come from Tom’s Hardware’s August 2026 report of a VideoLAN attribution. The outlet’s own Windows 11 test did not reproduce the delay. The official Microsoft material cited here provides general performance-diagnostic and exclusion guidance, not confirmation of the reported VLC incident. The reviewed sources do not establish affected versions or confirm that Microsoft or VideoLAN has issued an incident-specific fix.
