Canada’s telecom news for July 30–August 5, 2022, included quarterly subscriber and revenue results, network expansion announcements, public broadband funding, an advocacy campaign, and Quebec mobile-plan offers. The details below reflect MobileSyrup’s roundup published August 6, 2022; the plans and rollout dates are historical, not current availability or pricing.

What Canadian telecom companies reported

MobileSyrup reported that TELUS added 247,000 mobile and fixed customers in the second quarter of 2022, including 93,000 mobile phone connections. The roundup also described TELUS’s subscriber base as growing 4.2% year over year.

BCE added more than 110,000 mobile net subscribers, according to the roundup. Québecor reported second-quarter 2022 revenue of $1.12 billion, a decrease of $16 million, or 1.4%, compared with the same quarter in 2021. These figures are as presented by MobileSyrup, rather than independently checked against company filings.

Northwestel fibre reached two communities

Northwestel had launched fibre internet service offering speeds of up to 300Mbps in Fort Good Hope and Tulita in the Northwest Territories.

Public funding and provincial broadband plans

The roundup reported that the CRTC allocated $20.5 million to support 10 wireless and internet projects serving 35 communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba, and Quebec.

Ontario announced agreements intended to bring high-speed internet to 266,000 homes and businesses. The province said the eight agreements involved providers including Bell, Cogeco, Xplornet, and Rogers. These are reported initiative targets, not confirmation that every location was connected during the week covered.

OpenMedia and Leadnow petition campaign

OpenMedia and Leadnow had obtained 28,000 petition signatures while urging the federal government to address what the organizations called Canada’s telecom monopoly. “Monopoly” is the advocates’ characterization, as reported by MobileSyrup, not an independent finding established by the roundup.
