A kite can lift a camera above the ground and turn it into a tethered aerial platform. Long before powered aircraft made aerial photography routine, late-19th-century experimenters used kites to take photographs from the air. Their early history is disputed; one of its most dramatic results was G.R. Lawrence’s panoramic view of earthquake- and fire-damaged San Francisco in 1906.
What is kite aerial photography?
Kite aerial photography (KAP) is the practice of lifting a camera with a kite and using it to photograph the ground from above. The kite provides lift while a line keeps the camera connected to the operator. Early systems used mechanical arrangements such as timed or fuse-triggered shutters; modern examples can carry digital cameras.
The camera’s position matters. Rather than fastening it directly to the kite, practitioners including Arthur Batut and Emile Wenz came to suspend the camera from the kite line, some distance below the kite. A later recreation of Lawrence’s famous image used a single rokkaku kite with a small digital camera rig. These examples show the basic idea, not a universal design for every camera or flying condition.
Who invented kite aerial photography?
There is no single uncontested inventor or start date in the historical accounts. Some credit British meteorologist E.D. Archibald with early experiments and photographs; other accounts point to French photographer Arthur Batut’s work in 1888. Batut published a book on the subject in 1890. Emile Wenz was another early practitioner.

Kite photography found scientific, military, and general-viewing uses around the turn of the 20th century. Kites offered a way to raise cameras before aerial photography from aircraft became more capable. As aircraft photography improved, KAP lost prominence.
How did G.R. Lawrence photograph San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake?
After the 1906 earthquake and fires devastated San Francisco, photographer G.R. Lawrence used a kite train to lift a panoramic camera for a sweeping view of the damaged city. The textbook account describes a train of up to 17 Conyne kites and a camera with a field of view of around 160 degrees. The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum also records an earlier kite-photography experiment by Hugh D. Wise in 1895: his kite was 18 feet high, and the camera was reported at 600 feet altitude.

Those figures belong to specific historical accounts, not recommended heights or standard equipment specifications. Lawrence’s image is striking both as a record of the disaster and as an example of how much photographic equipment a kite system could lift.
What equipment does kite aerial photography need?
The basic arrangement has three parts: a kite that can provide lift, a line and a way to manage it, and a camera with a suitable suspension or mounting rig. The camera and rig must suit the kite and conditions; the historical sources do not establish a universally appropriate wind range, payload limit, or camera setup.

Under 14 CFR § 101.15, an unshielded moored kite flown more than 150 feet above the earth’s surface requires advance notice to the nearest FAA air traffic control (ATC) facility at least 24 hours before the operation begins. The required information includes the owner or operator’s name and address, the kite’s size and weight, the location and planned height, and the date, time, and duration of the operation. The 150-foot figure is a regulatory threshold, not a recommended operating height.

This provision concerns moored kites; it should not be confused with requirements for drones. The FAA’s aeronautical information on unmanned aircraft systems describes commercial aerial photography as an example of an operation under Part 107 when carried out with a small unmanned aircraft system. That drone guidance does not, by itself, establish the rules for a tethered kite. The regulation cited here is specific to the United States; requirements elsewhere may differ.
