A VPS hosts the agent, but you must separately configure an AI provider and model—or a custom endpoint for a self-hosted model.
What to check before you buy a VPS
Start with the operating system and CPU architecture, then compare memory, CPU cores, persistent storage, backups, region, and monthly price. These are selection criteria based on Hermes’ compatibility and Docker resource guidance, not a ranking of hosting companies. Confirm the current plan specifications and Linux image with the provider before purchasing.

- Operating system: The installer supports Linux; the platform page describes the latest Ubuntu as its tested Linux baseline. Other distributions with glibc, systemd, and the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard are likely to work well, but that is not the same as a guarantee for every distribution.
- Architecture: Hermes lists Linux/WSL2 with the installer and Docker on x86_64 and aarch64. Check the VPS plan’s actual architecture rather than assuming all plans from a provider use the same one. See Hermes platform support.
- Memory, CPU, and disk: For Docker, the official guide gives the minimum and recommended resources below. These are documentation recommendations, not independent benchmarks or a universal sizing guarantee for every installation method.
- Persistent storage and recovery: If using Docker, make sure the host-mounted data directory can be retained and backed up. For either deployment, check what backup or snapshot options the VPS provider offers.

The figures are from Nous Research’s Hermes Docker documentation. Browser automation using Playwright/Chromium is identified there as the most memory-hungry feature. Other services on the VPS, browser use, and data growth can affect how much capacity you need.
Choose direct Linux installation or Docker
Both routes are documented for supported architectures. Choose based on how you prefer to manage software and persistent data, not on an assumption that one route is universally better.

Direct Linux route
The official installation page states that Git is the only prerequisite on non-Windows systems; Linux also needs curl and xz-utils. For Debian or Ubuntu, the page shows installing those packages with the system package manager. The installer handles several runtime dependencies, including Python, Node.js, ripgrep, and ffmpeg.
- Choose a supported Linux image and architecture when creating the VPS.
- Connect to the server and follow the current shell-installer command and options in the installation documentation.
- If the server will not use browser automation, review the installer’s documented option to skip browser setup.
Docker route
Use the official Docker instructions to deploy the container image and mount the host directory used for Hermes data at /opt/data. The guide says that this directory holds configuration, API keys, sessions, skills, and memories.
- Install and configure Docker on the VPS using the instructions appropriate to its Linux distribution.
- Follow the Hermes Docker guide to start the container with its user-data directory mounted at
/opt/data. - Before replacing or migrating the container, preserve and back up that mounted directory. The image is stateless, but the mounted data contains the agent’s user information and configuration.
Configure a provider and confirm a chat
Installing Hermes does not by itself configure an AI service. The quickstart’s recommended sequence is to choose a provider and model, confirm that an ordinary chat works, and only then add other features. A reader who wants a local or self-hosted model can configure a custom endpoint. See the Hermes Agent Quickstart for the current setup flow.
Gateway, cron, skills, voice, and routing are optional additions to consider after the basic chat succeeds. Renting a VPS pays for the server environment; model access may require separate provider configuration. The documentation cited here does not establish current model prices or a total monthly cost.
Can you buy a VPS with Hermes preinstalled?
A third-party page describes a DigitalOcean Hermes 1-Click image as well as manual installation. That mention is not confirmation that the image is currently available, what it includes, or what it costs. Check DigitalOcean’s own current product listings before relying on it; otherwise, select a compatible VPS and install Hermes using the official documentation.
