Make’s 2013 review praised its sturdy construction and large prints while noting a steep learning curve and awkward access to an extruder blockage. Airwolf’s 2017 page records a large heated build area but no auto-leveling or full enclosure. Current stock, pricing, parts availability, and service status are not established.
What the Airwolf AW3D XL was
Airwolf says the AW3D XL reached the market in 2013. Make published its model-specific review on November 26, 2013, describing a desktop printer aimed at users who wanted more build area than a typical small-format machine of that period.
The published dimensions differ slightly by source and date. Make listed a 12 × 7.9 × 7-inch print volume in 2013; Airwolf’s June 2017 page rounded the build volume to 8 × 12 × 7 inches. These are historical specifications, not confirmation that every revision has the same usable volume.
Historical specifications and capabilities
| Feature | What the historical source reports |
|---|---|
| Build or print volume | 12 × 7.9 × 7 inches in Make’s 2013 review; 8 × 12 × 7 inches on Airwolf’s 2017 page. |
| Bed | Make described a heated glass bed in 2013. Airwolf’s 2017 page also listed a heated bed. |
| Leveling and enclosure | Airwolf’s 2017 page said the XL had no auto-leveling and no full enclosure. |
| Materials named | Make listed ABS, PLA, HIPS, nylon, PVA, Laywood, and other materials in 2013. Airwolf’s 2017 page also named polycarbonate. Neither source establishes identical material support across all revisions or configurations. |
| Tested price | Make listed $2,399 assembled as the price tested in its 2013 review. This is not a current price. |
| Computer and workflow | Make’s 2013 test used MatterControl and Slic3r, reported that MatterControl was Windows-only at the time, and said the printer could not print untethered. |
There is a source discrepancy on whether the machine was open-source. Make’s review said the hardware was not open-source while noting open-source software tools were available through Airwolf’s downloads page. Airwolf later described the XL as an open-source machine. The available accounts do not resolve the terminology or licensing for every hardware revision.

What the 2013 review found in use
Strengths: a substantial frame and room for larger prints
Tom Burtonwood of Make characterized the printer as a “solid, robust machine” with potential for quality, large-volume prints. The review described the acrylic frame as structurally sound and the heated glass bed as useful for a variety of materials. It also noted that the Deluxe model offered interchangeable 0.35 mm or 0.50 mm nozzles. These are observations from the review setup, not performance guarantees for every used unit today.
Drawbacks: learning curve and maintenance access
Make cautioned that beginners might find the RepRap-style machine daunting, though the reviewer said Airwolf provided documentation and support at the time. During testing, the reviewer encountered a blocked extruder. Make reported that support responded by phone and email within 20 minutes and guided the reviewer through diagnosing and clearing the jam. The review also found access to the blockage less straightforward than desirable. One incident does not establish a failure rate, and the historical support response should not be taken as a promise of current service.

Software and operating workflow
The reviewed setup paired MatterControl for printer control with Slic3r for slicing. Make reported that MatterControl was Windows-only when the review appeared, while the printer listing included Linux, Mac, and Windows support; the test also reported that printing required a tethered computer. Those statements describe the 2013 software and test setup, not present-day compatibility.
Anyone considering an existing AW3D XL should identify its exact revision and verify that archived software downloads still work with the intended operating system before relying on this workflow. The cited sources do not establish current software support.

Is a used AW3D XL a sensible choice?
It may interest an experienced hobbyist or maker who values a large heated build area and is comfortable diagnosing and maintaining legacy equipment. It is a much harder fit for someone who needs straightforward setup, modern support, or readily available replacement parts. Before buying or restoring one, check the individual machine rather than assuming historical features apply to that unit.
- Confirm the revision and condition: Ask for the machine’s version, working demonstration, and actual usable build dimensions. The historical listings do not prove the condition or configuration of a particular used printer.
- Inspect the bed and hot end: Check whether the heated bed functions and whether the extruder can be accessed and cleared if necessary.
- Verify consumables and replacement parts: Airwolf’s historical page mentioned extra HD/XL glass, and the 2012 manual said the company could supply replacement parts at that time. Neither establishes current availability. Confirm glass dimensions and part fit for the specific revision before purchasing anything.
- Check material and software details: The listed materials are historical and do not establish filament diameter or compatibility with a particular modern spool. Confirm the machine’s requirements and operating-system workflow before buying filament or setting it up.
- Compare the practical trade-offs: Evaluate build volume alongside enclosure, leveling, setup effort, maintenance access, software needs, and the age and availability of parts. The sources provide no tested comparison with competing printers.
Safety and revision-specific documentation
Airwolf’s 2012 AW3D v.4/v.5 manual warns users to keep hands away from the hot end, heated bed, belts, gears, and power supply unless the machine is unplugged and cooled, and to unplug it if it malfunctions. Because that manual covers named revisions and dates from 2012, use the manual matching the printer in hand rather than assuming its directions cover every AW3D XL version.

Verdict
The AW3D XL’s historical appeal was straightforward: a robustly described machine, a heated bed, and a comparatively large build area. Make’s hands-on review also makes clear that its RepRap-style operation and less convenient extruder access demanded patience. Since current sales, service, parts, and software compatibility are not established, this is best treated as a legacy-printer review—not a current buying recommendation.
