Three Galaxy settings can reduce avoidable battery drain: limit background activity for apps you rarely use, enable Power saving when its tradeoffs suit you, and shorten screen timeout while keeping brightness comfortable. These are practical adjustments, not a guaranteed fix or a measured battery-life increase. The best choices depend on your phone, software version, and which notifications or features you need.
Check what is using battery before changing settings
Start with Settings > Battery. On some Galaxy versions, open Settings > Device care > Battery instead. Review battery usage for apps with substantial activity, particularly those you rarely open. Samsung notes that menu names and feature availability vary by model, carrier, software version, and region; if a path does not match your phone, search for the setting by name in Settings.
New phones or phones that have just been set up may use more power for the first few days while apps and services optimize. Samsung also identifies an unstable mobile signal as a possible cause of increased drain, so a sudden change does not always mean a setting is wrong.
1. Put rarely used apps to sleep selectively
Open Settings > Battery or Settings > Device care > Battery, then look for Background usage limits. Add apps you seldom use to Sleeping apps or, when stricter limits are appropriate, Deep sleeping apps. Samsung’s menu path can differ across devices.

Choose the right sleep level
- Sleeping apps: Limits background use for apps you do not use often. This can reduce their activity without applying the strictest restriction.
- Deep sleeping apps: These apps run only when you open them. They may not send notifications or update in the background until then.
Keep messaging, security, health, travel, and other time-sensitive apps out of deep sleep if you depend on their alerts or background updates. Samsung Developer documentation says the inactivity threshold for deep sleep is currently 16 days; that value is subject to change and is not a battery-savings estimate. The documentation also describes exceptions and an Android 14/One UI 6 foreground-service note, so behavior can depend on the app and software version: Samsung Developer: App management.
2. Use Power saving when its tradeoffs are acceptable
Turn on Power saving from Settings > Battery, or use the Power saving control in Quick Settings if your model provides it. The mode can restrict background activity and data, and may disable power-intensive features such as Always On Display. Samsung warns that notifications or updates may be delayed and performance may be affected.

Use it when extending the time before your next charge matters more than immediate background activity or full performance. For ordinary use, app-specific sleep limits are more selective. Samsung US also documents a Light performance profile on supported models; its availability and effect depend on device and software, so search Settings for “Performance profile” if you want to check whether it is offered.
3. Reduce screen-on time without making the display hard to use
Go to Settings > Display > Screen timeout and choose a shorter interval that still works for you. Samsung US lists 15 seconds as the shortest choice and 30 seconds as the default on the devices covered by its support page; those values may not appear on every Galaxy. Lowering brightness or enabling adaptive brightness can also reduce display power use, but choose a level that remains comfortable and readable.

Samsung identifies high brightness and a long screen timeout as factors that can reduce battery life. These changes reduce screen use; they do not repair a worn battery.
Battery protection is about battery lifespan, not an immediate drain fix
Battery protection changes charging behavior to support long-term battery lifespan. It is useful to understand as a charge-management feature, but it does not reduce current screen or app power use in the same way as the settings above. Its options and menu location vary by model and software.

When settings are not enough
Samsung describes a phone battery as a consumable component: repeated charging and discharging gradually reduce its capacity, and that lost capacity cannot be restored through settings. If the battery still drains unusually quickly after checking app usage and accounting for signal or recent setup, use Samsung’s battery diagnostics or contact Samsung support about service options. Repair availability and terms vary by region.
