FreeDOS can run on a modern PC if the computer supports legacy BIOS booting, either directly or through a firmware setting such as Legacy or Compatibility mode. If the PC is UEFI-only, the FreeDOS Project recommends running it in an emulator or virtual machine instead. Even when it boots, hardware-dependent DOS programs may need specific memory, sound, or CD-ROM drivers.
How do I install FreeDOS on a modern PC?
For a first try, use the FreeDOS LiveCD in a virtual machine. The FreeDOS Project recommends a virtual machine or emulator for most users, and this route avoids changing the computer’s firmware or installing DOS directly on its storage.
- Choose where to run it. For a virtual machine, use software such as VirtualBox, QEMU, Bochs, PCem, 86Box, or Dosemu2. The FreeDOS Project recommends the LiveCD installation image for virtual machines.
- For bare-metal installation, check firmware first. Look for a Legacy or Compatibility boot option. The official FreeDOS installation guide conditions direct installation on legacy BIOS support; a UEFI-only system should use a virtual machine or emulator.
- Choose media the computer can boot. For real hardware without an optical drive, the FreeDOS Project offers FullUSB and LiteUSB images. Write the selected image to a USB flash drive with an image-writing program such as Rufus, then boot the computer from it. Virtual-machine users can mount the LiveCD image without buying a USB drive.
- Start the installation. Boot the media and choose the option to install FreeDOS to the hard disk. The installer can create and format a DOS partition. It may then ask you to reboot so it can reread the partition information before continuing.
- Select the installation set. Choose a basic installation or a fuller package set according to what you plan to use. Follow the installer prompts to finish.
The FreeDOS download page lists an Intel-compatible CPU, 640 kB of memory, and at least a 20 MB hard disk as minimum requirements. These are baseline requirements, not a compatibility guarantee for a recent PC’s motherboard, storage controller, graphics device, or peripherals.
Can FreeDOS boot on UEFI?
UEFI by itself does not establish that a computer can boot FreeDOS directly. According to the FreeDOS Project’s installation guidance, direct installation requires legacy BIOS behavior. If the firmware offers Legacy or Compatibility mode, enable it and check that the chosen installation media appears in the boot menu. If the machine has no such option, use FreeDOS in a virtual machine or emulator.

The project does not publish a general success-rate figure for modern computers, so compatibility should be checked on the individual machine rather than assumed from its age or specifications.
Which FreeDOS USB installer should I use?
| Image | Best fit |
|---|---|
| LiveCD | Virtual machines; the FreeDOS Project recommends it for this use. |
| FullUSB | Real hardware without an optical drive when you want the fuller package set. |
| LiteUSB | Real hardware without an optical drive when a lighter installation image suits your needs. |
| LegacyCD | Older hardware with a working optical drive. |
| Floppy edition | Classic systems that boot from floppy disks. |
Use an image that matches both the installation goal and the computer’s bootable media. For a USB installation on physical hardware, you need a USB flash drive; for a virtual machine, mount the image in the VM instead.

Virtual machine or direct installation: which should I choose?
| Approach | What it suits | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual machine or emulator | Trying FreeDOS while keeping it inside a host operating system. | Recommended by the FreeDOS Project for most users; use the LiveCD image. |
| Direct installation on the PC | Running FreeDOS on the physical machine. | Depends on legacy BIOS boot support, bootable installation media, and compatibility with the devices your DOS programs need. |
Will DOS programs and devices work once FreeDOS boots?
Not necessarily. Older DOS programs can access hardware directly, so booting FreeDOS does not ensure that every application, peripheral, or device will work. Check the requirements for the specific program you intend to run.
- Memory management: Some DOS games require particular memory managers or memory configurations.
- Sound: A program may need a sound driver configured for the hardware or environment available to it.
- CD-ROM access: Older software may require DOS CD-ROM drivers.
The FreeDOS Project’s games guidance notes that modern hardware may require specific drivers. Compatibility therefore depends on the individual PC and application, not just on whether FreeDOS starts.

Which FreeDOS version is current?
The FreeDOS Project announced FreeDOS 1.4 on April 5, 2025. The announcement says that FreeDOS 1.4 retained the kernel version from FreeDOS 1.3.
