1. No More Room in Hell: cooperative survival horror
No More Room in Hell is the strongest fit if you want a slower, more resource-conscious co-op experience. Steam describes it as “a co-operative realistic first person survival horror modification for the Source Engine.” Its listing highlights scarce ammunition, infection, survival mode, and more than 30 weapons.
Teamwork supports groups of up to eight players. That larger group size suits friends who want to coordinate through a horror scenario rather than simply shoot their way through unlimited supplies. Steam lists the game as 100% free unless you buy the soundtrack DLC. Its listed release date is October 31, 2011.
2. Codename CURE: objective missions and class roles
Pick Codename CURE if your group would rather complete defined missions than roam an open world. Steam lists objective and survival missions, with objective mode casting players as military operatives completing assignments against zombies.

Unturned is the pick for players who want to explore, gather resources, and craft in an open-world zombie survival sandbox. Its Steam listing includes single-player, co-op, online PvP, crafting, and sandbox play, so you can choose between solo survival and playing with others.

Steam describes its free-to-play model as having no pay-to-win mechanics, while cosmetics are available to customize characters. That makes it a different kind of free option from a mission-based co-op game: the appeal is the flexible survival loop, not a sequence of fixed objectives.
