Very small hollow metal spheres are specialist engineered components—not generic beads with a standard, interchangeable specification. Their uses include fast-moving valves and bearings, while assemblies of hollow spheres can support lightweight construction, heat protection, acoustic absorption and crash-energy absorption. A historical Fraunhofer IFAM example reported ground steel spheres 2–10 mm in diameter, but current stock, standard sizes and prices are not established by the available sources; confirm availability and specifications with a specialist supplier.
What are hollow metal spheres?
They are metal bodies with a hollow interior, made individually or assembled into structures. Their engineering value comes from combining a metal shell with less material and mass than a solid sphere of comparable outer dimensions. They are not interchangeable: alloy, diameter, wall thickness, mass, strength, finish and intended function all affect whether a particular sphere is suitable.
Fraunhofer IFAM describes powder-metallurgical production of hollow spheres and hollow-sphere structures using metals and alloys. Its listed materials include low-alloy steel; stainless steels 1.4404, 1.4841 and 1.4767; nickel and nickel alloys; intermetallics; molybdenum; tungsten; and precious metals. Heat conductivity, strength and oxidation resistance depend on the material and design, so general material characteristics should not be treated as guaranteed specifications for a particular component. What are they used for?
Individual moving components
IFAM identifies quickly responding ball valves, special fast-moving bearings and linear guides as potential uses for individually milled hollow spheres. In a moving mechanism, reducing a ball’s mass may help it respond more quickly, but suitability still depends on the component’s required dimensions, strength, surface and operating conditions.

Hollow-sphere structures
Joined spheres can form structures intended for lightweight construction, acoustic absorption, heat protection or crash-energy absorption. IFAM also names turbine abrasive seals. These are engineering applications, not evidence that a generic sphere or sphere assembly will meet a particular design requirement.
Other proposed roles
A journal article by Petrov, Bast, Petrov and Sheypak discusses hollow metal microspheres in lightweight construction, acoustic and thermal insulation, vibration protection and energy absorption, alongside chemical, powder and metallurgical production methods. Its online record is dated 2025-10-01, while its journal citation identifies the work as 2012, volume 6, issue 2-2, pages 144–150; those dates refer to different bibliographic details. What sizes and wall thicknesses have been reported?
A European Commission CORDIS account, last updated 14 October 2009, described Fraunhofer IFAM and hollomet GmbH producing ground hollow steel spheres measuring 2–10 mm in diameter. That report said those spheres were 40–70% lighter than solid spheres. It also described wall thicknesses adjustable from a few tenths of a millimeter to one millimeter. How were the reported steel spheres made?
The CORDIS account describes a process that began with polystyrene balls. A suspension containing metal powder and binder was applied to each ball; heat treatment removed the organic core and binder, and sintering joined the remaining metal powder into a cohesive shell. The spheres were then ground. The report notes that grinding required care because excessive pressure could deform the hollow body.

This is one documented manufacturing route, not the only way to make hollow metal spheres. The production method and finishing process matter when assessing a candidate part: they influence what geometry and wall thickness can be made and what details a supplier should document.
What should you check before choosing a sphere?
Compare actual candidate products against the needs of the application. Ask the supplier for measured specifications and evidence, rather than using the historical 2–10 mm example as a substitute for a current datasheet.

- Geometry: outer diameter, wall thickness, tolerances and finish.
- Mass and mechanical properties: measured mass or density, strength data and any relevant application evidence.
- Environment: oxidation resistance and compatibility with operating conditions.
- Manufacturing: production route and finishing details relevant to the required geometry or use.
- Fit for purpose: suitability for the specific valve, bearing, guide or structural design—not merely resemblance in size.
Are hollow glass microspheres the same thing?
No. Hollow glass microspheres are a different product class. ELMINAS identifies its HGMS series as silicate hollow glass microspheres for applications including insulation paints, putties, construction chemicals, automotive and aerospace products, and engineering plastics. They may be relevant when a lightweight filler is needed, but they are not metal components and their properties should not be attributed to hollow metal spheres.
