It is useful for exploring how fuel and microbes relate to an electrical reading, but a voltage reading alone does not show that the cell can power a useful device.
What is the Lime Jello, Yeast and Carbon Paper Fuel Cell?
The activity combines gelatin, sugar, dry yeast, and carbon-paper electrodes. The gelatin holds the mixture in place; the yeast is the microorganism in the demonstration; and the electrodes connect the mixture to a multimeter. In Kalee Tock’s 2019 proceedings article, the experiment is described as a lab in which students test voltage across yeast suspended in lime Jello. The Åbo Akademi University handout describes gelatin, sugar, and yeast more generally rather than requiring lime gelatin.

The underlying idea is microbial fuel-cell chemistry. The Åbo Akademi handout explains that microorganisms or isolated enzymes can act as biocatalysts: oxidation of a fuel releases electrons, which can pass through an external circuit to a cathode. That simplified explanation describes the principle, not proof that this particular gelatin-and-yeast setup produces enough current to run a practical load.
How to assemble the documented classroom version
The quantities below are the sample method in the Åbo Akademi University handout, whose publication year is not stated. They are reported classroom instructions, not a universally validated recipe.

#1 Best Overall
- The information below is per-pack only
- One 6 oz family sized box of Jell-O Lime Artificially Flavored Gelatin Dessert Mix
- Jell-O Lime Artificially Flavored Gelatin Dessert Mix is a sweet treat on its own as well as a perfect ingredient for desserts
- Green Jell-O contains 90 calories per serving
- To prepare, add 2 cups boiling water to gelatin mix, stir 2 minutes until completely dissolved, stir in 2 cups cold water, then refrigerate 4 hours or until firm
- Prepare the gelatin. Make 200 ml of firm gelatin using 2 teaspoons of gelatin powder in 200 ml of liquid.
- Add sugar while warm. Stir in 2 tablespoons of sugar while the gelatin mixture is warm.
- Cool before adding yeast. Let the mixture cool sufficiently, then add half a packet of dry yeast. The handout does not specify a precise temperature.
- Set the mixture. Transfer it to a container and allow the gelatin to set.
- Fit the electrodes. Cut round gel cells and attach carbon-paper electrodes to opposite sides. The handout also lists alligator clips for making connections.
- Measure voltage. Connect the electrodes to a multimeter and read the voltage across the cell.
Keep track of the exact ingredients, timing, and any changes to the steps. Tock describes a student who forgot the yeast until the gelatin had set, remelted the mixture, monitored its temperature, added the yeast, and let it set again. The student’s report did not record that history, and the resulting voltage differed somewhat from other students’ readings. The example shows why documenting deviations matters when comparing classroom results.
What does a voltage reading mean?
The Åbo Akademi handout reports approximately 340 mV in one demonstration. That is one result from the handout, not a standard output or a guaranteed reading for another build. Differences in preparation and measurement can make classroom results vary.
Voltage indicates an electrical potential difference between the electrodes. It does not by itself establish how much current the cell can supply or whether it can sustain a device. The handout specifically cautions that voltage may be measurable even when it is difficult to draw electricity from the cell. It attributes the transfer challenge to electrons being difficult to transport through yeast-cell membranes and describes a mediator as one possible way to improve transfer. Methylene blue is mentioned as an example used in biofuel cells; the classroom recipe here does not provide a protocol or safety guidance for adding it.

The Åbo Akademi handout proposes questions that can be paraphrased in English as follows:
- How does the amount of fuel affect voltage?
- What role does gelatin have in the fuel cell?
- What else besides household sugar could be used as fuel?
For a useful comparison, change one factor at a time and keep the other preparation and measurement conditions as consistent as possible. Record the changes and the readings, including unexpected delays or reheating, so another student can interpret the result.
DIY demonstration or purpose-made classroom cell?
The American Chemical Society’s ChemMatters teacher guide references both a purchasable classroom microbial fuel-cell resource and DIY directions using Jell-O, dry yeast, and carbon paper. It says the DIY directions do not require buying a fuel cell. The available guide does not establish current kit prices, availability, durability, output, or comparative performance.
Choose the gelatin version when the goal is a low-complexity demonstration using familiar materials and an opportunity to discuss experimental controls. A purpose-made educational cell may suit a lesson designed around its packaged apparatus, but the cited guide alone does not show that it will produce more repeatable or useful results.
