For Sentry to show the right file and line after a React Native OTA update, upload the source map generated for that exact bundle and make sure Sentry can associate it with the update that produced the error. A map from a nearby build can point to the wrong code. With Expo EAS Update, upload the publication’s dist output after publishing; for another OTA provider, use its own update identity and verify the provider-specific Sentry setup.
What needs to match for an OTA stack trace to resolve?
Think of an OTA deployment as a linked set of artifacts and identities, not just a JavaScript file. The running bundle must be compatible with the native binary, the source map must describe that exact bundle, and Sentry needs the release or update context that links the error event to the uploaded map.
- Native binary and runtime: the installed app’s platform, React Native and Hermes versions, and configured update-compatibility boundary determine which update can run.
- OTA bundle and source map: both must come from the same build output. React Native warns that even small source changes can cause large offset differences, so a map from another build may produce incorrect or unresolved locations. See React Native’s version 0.75 release-build debugging guide.
- Sentry release and event context: the identity used when creating a Sentry release and uploading its map must line up with the identity available to the error event. Sentry accepts release versions such as a version number or commit hash, but that does not establish one naming convention for every OTA provider. See Sentry’s release API documentation.
In practice, identify the installed binary family and the particular OTA update first. Do not infer an older app’s Hermes runtime from the latest React Native defaults: a binary already in the field continues to use the runtime with which it was built.
Should each OTA update have its own Sentry release?
There is no universal release-naming rule established for every Sentry SDK and OTA provider. The important requirement is that the uploaded map and the event can be unambiguously associated with the same deployed code. An app-version release may be too coarse when several different OTA bundles can run under that app version; an update-level identity makes those deployments easier to distinguish, provided your SDK and provider support carrying it consistently.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Identity level | What it identifies | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| App version or native build | A release of the installed application binary | Useful for native-build context, but multiple OTA bundles may share it. Confirm it distinguishes the JavaScript artifact relevant to the event. |
| OTA update or update group | A particular published JavaScript update, as represented by the OTA provider | Can identify the code more precisely when the event carries the same value used for the Sentry release and map upload. Confirm how your provider and SDK expose that value. |
Expo’s Sentry guide shows adding update metadata to Sentry scope for EAS Update. Treat that as Expo-specific guidance rather than a generic Sentry SDK recipe: a custom OTA system needs provider- and SDK-specific verification. The same guide, last updated June 29, 2026, is Expo’s “Using Sentry” documentation.
How do I upload source maps for an EAS Update to Sentry?
Generate and retain the map with the update output, publish the update, then upload that publication’s output. Expo’s documented command for uploading the generated dist directory is:

npx sentry-expo-upload-sourcemaps dist
- Run the EAS Update publication process for the intended update.
- After publication, run
npx sentry-expo-upload-sourcemaps distagainst thedistdirectory generated for that publication. - In CI, ensure the upload consumes the same immutable output from the publication job, not a stale or overwritten
distdirectory. Make publication and upload a controlled sequence so a failed upload is visible to the release pipeline. - Confirm the Sentry release and event context correspond to the published update, using the update metadata approach supported by your Expo and Sentry SDK configuration.
Expo says that errors for those updates will then be symbolicated. Its instructions apply to EAS Update; do not copy this command as a generic recipe for a different OTA service. The Expo guide also recommends verifying a release build and the uploaded maps.
How do Hermes and native runtime compatibility affect the map?
Hermes adds a runtime-compatibility concern beyond matching source code to a map. Expo documents that eas update and npx expo export generate Hermes bytecode bundles and source maps, and warns that bytecode format can change between Hermes versions. If a binary’s runtime cannot load the update’s bytecode, source-map correctness will not make that update compatible.

Expo recommends updating runtimeVersion when React Native changes, following the applicable Expo runtime policy, so older binaries do not receive incompatible updates. Check the actual runtime and compatibility policy for the binary family already installed in the field; a current release default is not proof of what an existing binary contains. React Native 0.84 made Hermes V1 the default on iOS and Android when announced February 11, 2026, as described in the React Native 0.84 announcement.
Are source maps emitted for both iOS and Android?
Check the build output for the React Native version and build configuration you actually ship. The version 0.75 release-debugging guide says Android source maps are enabled by default when using the specified Hermes flags, while iOS source maps are disabled by default and shows configuring SOURCEMAP_FILE in the Xcode bundle phase. These are versioned instructions, not a guarantee that every newer or differently configured project emits maps in the same way.

The React Native Gradle Plugin documentation, last updated August 12, 2026, lists the default hermesFlags as ['-O', '-output-source-map'] and notes that a non-debuggable variant task invokes bundling, hermesc, and compose-source-map. See the React Native Gradle Plugin documentation. Inspect the artifacts produced by your own platform builds rather than copying an output path from an older guide.
How can I diagnose minified or incorrectly mapped OTA errors?
- Trace remains minified or unresolved: check that the map for the exact published bundle was generated and uploaded, then check that the Sentry event’s release context matches the release used for that map.
- Trace resolves to the wrong file or line: suspect a map from another build or update. Small code changes can shift offsets substantially; upload the map belonging to the bundle that actually ran, not the latest available map.
- Only one platform fails: verify that platform’s release build emitted a source map. iOS and Android map generation can have different defaults and configuration.
- Update will not run on an older app binary: investigate the native binary’s React Native/Hermes runtime and the OTA compatibility boundary, including Expo
runtimeVersionpolicy where applicable. This is a compatibility problem, not a symbolication fix.
For a release-like verification, deliberately trigger a known exception in a build using the intended update, then inspect whether Sentry resolves it to the expected source file and line. Perform this check for the platforms and update paths you ship.

What changes for a custom OTA provider?
Keep the invariant: preserve and upload the source map generated for the exact running bundle, and make the Sentry event’s release/update context identify that same deployment. The documented EAS dist command and Expo scope examples do not establish the correct configuration for another OTA service. Verify how that provider identifies updates, how your Sentry SDK attaches that identity to events, and how the upload associates the map with the intended Sentry release before adopting provider-specific commands.
