Careful code reviews made software engineer André Degaspari enjoy his work more—not because reviews are proven to make developers happier in general, but because, in his experience, they helped him support teammates, keep code maintainable, and avoid preventable emergencies.
Why reviewing code changed how the work felt
In his September 21, 2026 essay, André Degaspari describes code review as a way to look beyond whether a change compiles or passes a basic check. He asks whether it delivers what the client needs, fits the codebase’s standards, helps the colleague who submitted it, and will make sense to the person who has to change it later.
That broader view gave review a purpose beyond approving or rejecting a pull request. Degaspari could help a teammate improve a change while also protecting the future quality of the software he might have to maintain himself.
What Degaspari looked for in a review
Does the change deliver the intended feature?
Start with the reason the change exists. A clean-looking implementation is not enough if it misses the user’s actual need. Degaspari’s first lens is the client who will use the feature: does the proposed code accomplish the intended outcome?

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does it fit the codebase’s standards and architecture?
Degaspari describes a microservice that had originally been developed with hexagonal architecture and domain-driven design. After team changes, he used reviews to identify code in the wrong place and explain why its location mattered. Sometimes the explanation needed a conversation on a call rather than a terse comment.
His experience was that this could prompt teammates to think more carefully about what they submitted, write better pull requests, and take more interest in reviewing one another’s work. Those are observations about his own team, not measured results or a guarantee that every review process will have the same effect.

Will another developer understand it later?
A review also looks forward to the next change. Ask, “How can I make my life easier in the future if I have to work on this code?” Clear structure and understandable choices matter because code is read and modified after its original author has moved on.
Can feedback help the colleague, not just the code?
Degaspari’s question, “How can I help my colleagues with my review?”, shifts feedback from fault-finding toward useful explanation. If a requested change follows an established architectural choice, state the reason. That gives the author context they can use on the next change, rather than only a list of edits to make.

What people should review—and what automation can check
Degaspari separates judgment-oriented review from mechanical checks. Linting and code-coverage checks can be automated; human attention can then go to whether the implementation meets the feature’s intent, respects design decisions, and remains understandable.
This is not a choice between review and automation. AWS Well-Architected Framework guidance recommends integrating manual code review into development so the author is not the only quality checker, and says review can be supported by automation and testing. AWS identifies possible benefits such as consistency, catching issues earlier, and knowledge transfer; it does not claim that reviews guarantee those outcomes in every team.

How this can make work more enjoyable for one developer
For Degaspari, reviews helped catch bugs before QA and keep code easier to understand and change. He also connected maintainability with a personal, practical concern: avoiding pressure and late-night emergency work. Helping the company is a benefit, but he says it is not his main reason for reviewing carefully.
“The company benefits from that too, but that’s not why I do it, I do it because it can be the difference between a job I survive and a job I actually enjoy.”

Degaspari estimates that a good review takes him “30 minutes to an hour of focused attention.” That is his personal estimate, not a general benchmark. His account illustrates how reviewing can feel more worthwhile when it serves teammates and future maintainers as well as the immediate change.
What the experience does—and does not—show
Degaspari’s essay is a first-person account, not a controlled study. It explains why careful reviews improved his own experience and what he noticed on his team; it does not establish that code review causes developer happiness across organizations. AWS guidance independently supports manual review as a development practice, but likewise does not establish a happiness effect.
For a reader, the useful takeaway is modest: reviews can be an opportunity to improve a change, share context, and reduce avoidable maintenance problems. Whether that makes the job more enjoyable depends on the people, codebase, and way the team handles feedback.
