Start by measuring the server’s actual electricity use at the wall, then make one change at a time and measure again. The biggest practical opportunities are often retiring or consolidating equipment you do not need, enabling supported power-management features, and avoiding unnecessary cooling. Replace hardware only when measured use, workload needs, and total cost make the case.

1. Measure power before changing settings or hardware

A power supply’s wattage rating describes its capacity, not the server’s actual draw. Measure the complete setup you intend to optimize, including drives, fans, and attached equipment whose consumption will change with it.

For one server

Use a suitable wall power meter and record a normal idle period as well as representative work. If the server’s activity varies by day, measure long enough to capture that pattern. Use the meter’s logged energy in kilowatt-hours (kWh), or calculate it from power readings over time, rather than treating a brief wattage reading as a typical day.

For a rack or server room

An intelligent PDU can trend consumption by outlet or rack and help identify high-use or unnecessary equipment. ENERGY STAR describes PDU monitoring as a way to find efficiency opportunities, support capacity planning, and compare facility power with IT load: ENERGY STAR guidance on reducing PDU energy losses. A home-server owner generally does not need to calculate power usage effectiveness (PUE) to decide whether an individual machine is using more power than necessary.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Estimate annual energy and cost

  1. Use a representative day or week of measured kWh to estimate annual kWh; account for weekday, weekend, or seasonal differences if they materially change use.
  2. Multiply the estimated kWh by your actual electricity rate to estimate the energy charge for the same period. Check your bill for the applicable rate and billing period.
  3. After a change, repeat the measurement under comparable idle and workload conditions. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what affected consumption.

2. Find equipment that can be retired or consolidated

Inventory the machines and services in the setup. Separate equipment that is essential from services that could share a host, and identify machines or devices that are dormant or redundant. ENERGY STAR recommends consolidating lightly used servers and removing unnecessary hardware in its data-center efficiency guidance.

Consolidation can reduce the number of powered machines, but do not trade away a requirement you rely on. Before moving services, check their resource needs, performance and latency requirements, failure domains, backup plan, and recovery process. A single consolidated host can also create a larger outage if it fails; keep required redundancy and backups in the design.

3. Enable power management that fits the workload

Review the settings that control processor power use and power-saving states. Depending on the server, relevant controls may be in BIOS/UEFI, firmware, the hypervisor, or the operating system. ENERGY STAR notes that server power management may not be configured for optimal efficiency by default, and advises keeping it engaged for certified servers: ENERGY STAR Enterprise Servers and ENERGY STAR purchasing guidance.

4. Review storage, fans, and attached devices

Check whether every drive, controller, fan, and attached device is required and active. If storage is a significant part of the load, consider whether you can consolidate it or use a more efficient arrangement while meeting your backup, availability, and performance requirements. ENERGY STAR includes efficient data-storage measures in its data-center guidance.

Do not assume a particular storage technique will produce a specific reduction: the cited ENERGY STAR example of deduplication reducing stored data by more than 95% applies to some organizations, not as a guaranteed result for an individual home server.

5. Reduce avoidable cooling

Keep air intakes and exhausts clear, and arrange equipment so hot exhaust does not flow straight back into an intake. Avoid overcooling the room without a reason. In a larger server room, examine airflow paths, equipment placement, and whether cooling is running continuously at an unnecessarily low set point. EPA’s co-location data-center guidance discusses airflow management, operating temperature, cabling, and hot/cold aisle separation.

The EPA’s figures are facility-specific, not home-server estimates: its May 17, 2023 release says airflow management could reduce energy use by 15%, a one-degree inlet-temperature increase could reduce cooling costs by 4%, and hot/cold aisle separation could reduce consumption by 10–35% depending on setup. Do not apply those percentages directly to a home server or raise temperatures beyond equipment requirements.

6. Evaluate a UPS and power-distribution equipment

A UPS protects equipment during power problems, but conversion losses vary with the unit and its load. If buying or replacing one, compare efficiency and operating modes for the protection you actually require, and avoid sacrificing necessary backup capability simply to pursue a general savings claim. ENERGY STAR recommends efficient UPSs and appropriate loading in its purchasing guidance.

ENERGY STAR reports that certified UPSs have 40–60% lower energy losses than standard models as a program-level comparison; the figure is not a promise for a particular UPS, load, or household. For PDUs, ENERGY STAR says models with high-efficiency transformers can be 2–3% more efficient overall than generic units with lower-efficiency transformers. Whether either purchase is worthwhile depends on your measured load, required features, and electricity rate.

7. Decide whether replacement hardware is worthwhile

Compare a replacement with your existing server using measured idle and active power, useful performance for your actual workload, power-supply efficiency, purchase cost, and any change in cooling needs. A more efficient machine is not automatically cheaper overall if it costs more upfront or does not suit the workload.

ENERGY STAR’s Enterprise Servers page says certified servers use 30% less energy than conventional models, attributing the comparison to components and power management at low workloads. Its Data Center Equipment page gives an example of over 650 kWh/year average savings for a certified server versus a standard server when power management is enabled. These program comparisons are not guaranteed savings for a specific home server; use your own baseline and verify currently eligible products and criteria in the ENERGY STAR Product Finder and server guidance. The page lists June 17, 2019 as the effective date of its current server specification, so confirm the applicable criteria when you shop.

Put the options in order of measured value

For each proposed change, compare the same practical factors before committing:

  • Energy: measured kWh saved under comparable idle and workload conditions.
  • Cost: upfront cost and expected payback using your local electricity rate.
  • Service impact: effects on performance, latency, uptime, backup, and redundancy.
  • Environment: changes to heat, cooling demand, and noise.

For context only, DOE says data centers account for approximately 2% of total U.S. electricity use on its Data Centers and Servers page. That national figure does not indicate the share used by a particular household server.
