Choose business internet by checking what is available at your exact address, matching capacity to your busiest workloads, and comparing the full contract—not by chasing the biggest advertised download speed. Fiber, cable, fixed wireless, DSL, satellite, and dedicated internet each fit different locations and reliability needs; no one connection is best for every business.

Start with the business address

Internet availability, speed, installation requirements, and price can change from one address to the next. Check providers’ availability tools and the FCC National Broadband Map, then confirm directly with providers that the offer is commercial service for your specific premises. Ask whether the quoted service can actually be installed there, what construction or installation may cost, and when it can be activated.

A map listing or advertised coverage is not an orderable-service guarantee. Fiber coverage figures, for example, count reported passings rather than confirming that a particular business can place an order. The Fiber Broadband Association reported nearly 100 million U.S. fiber passings, covering over 60% of U.S. households, in 2025, citing RVA deployment research in an April 15, 2026 article: Fiber Broadband Association.

Choose a connection type that fits the site

Connection What it can suit What to verify
DSL Light-use operations where it is available and faster wired options are not. Speeds at the address, upload capacity, and whether copper service is scheduled to be retired. Ask the provider what replacement service would be offered.
Cable Many small offices and retail sites that need broadly available wired service and substantial download capacity. Upload speed, peak-time consistency, and whether the plan’s performance and data terms support cloud work, calls, and backups.
Fiber Businesses with heavy simultaneous use, large file transfers, or a need for high capacity and strong uploads. Whether fiber reaches the premises, whether speeds are symmetrical, whether service is shared or dedicated, and whether a site survey or construction is required.
Fixed wireless or cellular Rural or limited-wired-service sites, mobile operations, or a secondary connection. Coverage and signal at the actual premises, expected performance under network conditions, data policies, and any uptime commitment.
Satellite Remote sites outside practical wired-service footprints. Current plan cost, data thresholds or prioritization, local conditions, latency, and installation requirements.
Dedicated internet Operations that need more predictable bandwidth and written service commitments. The precise SLA, including uptime definition, repair response, performance terms, and remedies. Dedicated service can cost more and may require construction.

DSL runs over copper phone lines and typically has limited bandwidth. Cable commonly uses coaxial cable for the last mile, often in a hybrid fiber-coaxial network; business plans can have much slower uploads than downloads. Fiber can provide high capacity, low latency, and symmetrical or near-symmetrical speeds, but the word “fiber” alone does not tell you whether the connection is dedicated or reaches your building. Fixed wireless, cellular, and satellite performance depends on coverage, signal, network conditions, and plan terms.

Business.com’s service-types guide discusses fixed wireless and cellular alongside DSL, cable, fiber, and satellite: Business Internet Service Types. Treat any typical speed shown in a provider’s marketing as an estimate, not a promise for your address.

Estimate the capacity your team needs

Count peak concurrent users and devices, then list what they do at the same time. Include video meetings and VoIP, cloud applications, file uploads and downloads, backups, point-of-sale systems, and guest Wi-Fi. Upload capacity matters for calls, cloud backups, and sending large files; download speed alone does not describe latency, jitter, congestion, or total capacity.

The Federal Communications Commission’s 2024 broadband benchmark is 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload. It is a benchmark, not a custom requirement for every business. Business.com quotes Jake Turner, co-founder and CFO of managed IT provider Cosmistack, with these rough starting bands:

Concurrent users Starting download-speed guidance attributed to Jake Turner
1–5 150–300 Mbps
5–10 300–500 Mbps
10–15 500–700 Mbps
15 or more 700 Mbps or higher

These ranges are starting guidance, not guarantees or a substitute for checking upload needs. Workload mix, simultaneous activity, Wi-Fi conditions, and future growth can move the requirement substantially. Allow more headroom when video conferencing or VoIP is frequent. Turner cautioned that gigabit plans may be more than a typical small office or retail setting needs, while choosing the slowest plan just to save money can create daily delays. The quoted guidance and comments appear in Business.com’s business internet buyer’s guide.

Decide how much reliability the operation requires

Ask providers for written terms on uptime, repair response, latency or performance, and service credits or other remedies. Read how the provider defines an outage, when the clock starts, and what exclusions apply. A general promise of “reliable” service is not a contractual guarantee.

Shared broadband can be adequate for many small operations, while dedicated internet may suit a business that needs more predictable performance and stronger written commitments. Dedicated service is not automatically immune to outages; confirm its actual SLA and the cost of meeting it. For operations that cannot tolerate a single connection failure, a second connection from a suitably independent provider or technology can provide a fallback. Julian Jacquez, president and COO of BCN Telecom, advised in Business.com’s broadband guide: “If your operations are critical, consider a second internet connection combined with an SD-WAN overlay.” See Business.com’s broadband guide.

Compare the full price and contract

Published prices are snapshots, not address-specific quotes. Business.com reports approximate observed ranges among major providers of $35–$70 per month for entry plans, $95–$100 per month for 500–750 Mbps plans, $115–$180 per month for plans at 1,000 Mbps or more, and $200 to more than $500 per month for dedicated enterprise fiber with a strong SLA. These are editorial examples, not universal tariffs; location, fees, and plan terms affect the amount you pay. Introductory prices may rise after the first 12 months. Decide whether you need a business plan

A business plan can offer features such as business support, static IP addresses, or SLA terms, but “business” in the plan name does not tell you which protections are included. Compare the actual service terms with your operational needs. A light-use small operation may be able to use residential broadband; a business that depends on rapid repair, specific IP settings, or written service commitments should verify those requirements before choosing.

Also check the network inside the premises. The provider may supply a gateway or router, but coverage and performance depend on the router, distance, local interference, and client devices. Confirm what equipment is included and whether it supports the space; add access points or your own compatible equipment only if needed. Business.com discusses these factors in its fiber internet guide and Wi-Fi router guide.

Use this decision sequence

  1. Check the premises: identify wired and wireless providers that can install service at the exact business address.
  2. Define peak demand: count concurrent users and devices and identify high-upload, real-time, and backup workloads.
  3. Shortlist technologies: compare available options for upload capacity, latency, consistency, data policy, and installation effort.
  4. Set the outage tolerance: decide what recovery time is acceptable and whether the primary plan’s SLA or a second connection can meet it.
  5. Compare written quotes: include recurring and one-time costs, post-promotion pricing, contract exit terms, and equipment.
  6. Confirm the details: have the provider verify installation, speed expectations, and every material service commitment before you sign.
