AOCC is AMD’s compiler toolchain for building C, C++ and Fortran applications on x86 Linux systems. It uses Clang and Clang++ for C and C++, and Flang for Fortran. AMD says the suite is optimized for x86, especially its Zen processors; that design focus is not proof that AOCC will outperform GCC or other compilers on every program.

What AOCC is and which languages it supports

AMD calls the suite the AMD Optimizing C/C++ and Fortran Compiler (AOCC). It is software downloaded from AMD, not a physical retail compiler. AMD describes it as an x86 CPU compiler that combines target-dependent and target-independent optimizations.

Language AOCC compiler Documented support
C Clang Clang supports 32-bit and 64-bit targets. AMD lists C17 as the default language standard.
C++ Clang++ Clang supports 32-bit and 64-bit targets. AMD lists C++17 as the default; its prerequisite notes specify libstdc++ version 9 or later for C++20.
Fortran Flang Flang supports 64-bit targets only. AMD lists Fortran 2008 support with Real128 features; coarrays are not supported.

Both compiler front ends handle stages such as preprocessing, parsing, optimization, code generation, assembly and linking. In practice, adoption also depends on the surrounding toolchain: the linker, libraries, build system and runtime environment can affect compatibility as much as the compiler executable.

See AMD’s AOCC product information and language support details for the vendor’s current feature descriptions.

What is current in AOCC 5.2

AMD’s current documented release is AOCC 5.2, released May 12, 2026. AMD identifies it as based on LLVM 17.0.6. The 5.2 release notes report fixes affecting C, C++ and Fortran applications, Zen5-tuned AOCL-LibM 5.3, and the addition of Fortran DO CONCURRENT parallelization.

For anyone maintaining build flags, the same release notes distinguish older deprecations from 5.2 changes: -finline-aggressive was deprecated in AOCC 5.1, with -mllvm -inline-threshold offered as an alternative, and -freroll-loops was also deprecated in 5.1.

Check Linux compatibility before downloading

AMD names RHEL 8.10 and 9.5, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP6, and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS for AOCC 5.2. Its prerequisite guidance says AOCC binaries are suitable only for Linux systems with glibc 2.28 or later; AMD also says other Linux versions with that glibc baseline may work. That broader statement is not the same as naming every distribution as officially supported. Confirm your exact OS and dependencies in the current guide and for the package you plan to install.

  • AMD recommends recent glibc and Binutils for better performance.
  • Listed prerequisites include libstdc++, libncurses-dev, zlib, libxml2, libquadmath and Python 3.x.
  • For C++20, AMD specifies libstdc++ version 9 or later.
  • AMD’s download notes say SLES does not support compiling 32-bit applications, although it can run 32-bit binaries.

Use AMD’s operating-system compatibility information and prerequisite list to check details before installation, since supported releases and dependencies can change.

Install AOCC from AMD’s download

AMD lists tar, Debian and RPM packages for AOCC 5.2. Downloads are subject to an End User License Agreement. The following steps describe AMD’s tar-archive route; package filenames and instructions can change, so obtain the archive and guide from AMD’s current AOCC downloads page.

  1. Download the AOCC 5.2 tar archive from AMD and review the license terms.
  2. Extract aocc-compiler-<ver>.tar and enter the unpacked directory.
  3. Run bash install.sh.
  4. Run source <compdir>/setenv_AOCC.sh in the shell where you want to use AOCC. This configures that current shell.
  5. Before proceeding, run AOCC-prerequisites-check.sh and address any reported failures.

AMD says this tar installation route does not require root or sudo. Its AOCC 5.2 user guide is the reference for the exact directory names and installation details.

Will AOCC be faster than GCC or Clang?

There is no universal answer established by AMD’s product description. AMD says AOCC is highly optimized for x86, especially AMD Zen processors, but that statement describes the suite’s focus—not a measured win against GCC, upstream Clang or another compiler. Results depend on the application, compiler version and options, target CPU, libraries and runtime conditions.

To choose for a particular project, build and measure representative workloads on the system that will run them. Keep hardware, libraries, build flags and measurement conditions consistent, and compare the dimensions that matter to your team:

Where to get help

AMD’s CPU Software Development Tools Technical Support page includes AOCC. The listed scope may cover installation, configuration and usage, suggested best practices, porting guidance for supported AMD processors, documentation, functional bugs and tool performance. It excludes application design and development, source-code and application debugging, unsupported language standards and third-party software.

AMD describes email support for listed tools and an NDA/SSO ticket route for eligible users. Its policy warns that it does not support versions older than one year from public release when a newer tool version is available, and that it may modify or end service. Check the live AMD technical support page for current eligibility and contact details.
