You can vibe code a website by turning a clear idea into a brief, generating a first version, then refining, testing, and publishing it in deliberate stages. Treat the generated preview as a draft—not proof the site is complete or ready for real visitors. This eight-step workflow applies to AI builders and AI-assisted coding tools, though their features and publishing processes differ.
1. Decide what the website needs to do
Before opening a builder, identify the site’s purpose, intended visitors, and the main action you want those visitors to take. For example, a local service business might want prospective customers to understand its services and submit an inquiry.
- Purpose: What should the site accomplish?
- Audience: Who will use it, and what do they need to know?
- Main action: Should visitors contact you, book, read, or buy?
For a first project, keep the scope modest: a few pages or a prototype is easier to assess than an unvalidated system with accounts, payments, and data storage.
2. Write a useful brief before prompting
A specific brief gives the builder more direction than a general request such as “make me a website.” Include the purpose, target visitors, pages, essential content, required functions, and visual direction. TechRadar recommends specifying elements such as the site’s purpose, pages, aesthetic, colors, and fonts in its vibe-coding walkthrough. Lovable’s documentation similarly advises clarifying purpose, target users, screens, and core functionality before starting a build: Lovable’s prompt best practices.

Use this as a starting prompt and adapt it to your project:
Create a website for [purpose] for [target visitors]. Include a home page, an about page, and a contact page. The main action should be [desired action]. Include [essential content or function]. Use [brand colors and visual direction]. Show me a preview before adding optional features.
Provide your own logo, images, and brand details when they matter. A prompt is a specification to work from, not a guarantee that the generated result will be accurate.

3. Inspect pages and navigation before polishing
Compare the generated site with your brief. Check that the expected pages exist, important information is present, and visitors can find their way between sections. Follow the navigation as if you were a first-time visitor.
- Is any requested page or section missing?
- Can visitors find the main action from the relevant pages?
- Does a key feature, such as a booking form, actually appear?
Ask for a missing page or core function directly before spending time on colors and spacing. Lovable describes its product as generating a site from a prompt and allowing follow-up chat or code edits, integrations, and publishing. Those are the company’s descriptions of its workflow, not independent proof that a particular result is complete or production-ready. Its own product page says: “Describe what you want and Lovable turns it into a polished website — design, content, and hosting included.” That is Lovable’s product description.
4. Refine the design in focused passes
Once the structure is sound, make bounded requests and review the preview after each meaningful change. For example, ask to adjust the header layout, improve the readability of body text, or make the primary button easier to spot—not to redesign the entire site and add several features at once.

- Revise copy, layout, typography, colors, spacing, or image placement one area at a time.
- Replace generic placeholders with suitable brand assets where needed.
- Check whether the change improved the page and did not disrupt another section.
Some tools support both chat-based refinements and direct code editing; Lovable says its builder offers both approaches. If you are comfortable editing code, a small direct change may be more practical than another broad prompt.
5. Add only the content tools and integrations you need
Choose features for the site’s actual job. A handful of pages that rarely change may not need a content management system (CMS). A site that publishes frequently may benefit from a separate editing workflow. Add ecommerce only if the site will sell something, and confirm that the builder supports the payment service you intend to use.

6. Test real user journeys and failure cases
Test the main task from beginning to end on desktop and mobile. Then try links, forms, navigation, and error states rather than checking only that the pages look right. TechRadar’s deployment guidance for AI-built applications recommends going beyond the happy path, including failed API requests, concurrent edits, access control, and database rules where relevant.
- Submit forms with valid, missing, and invalid information; confirm what the visitor sees.
- Open important links and use the site’s navigation on both small and large screens.
- If the site handles accounts or personal data, check that users can access only what they are meant to see.
- If an integration fails, confirm that the site gives a useful response rather than appearing to succeed.
The checks should match the site’s features. A simple informational site does not need payment tests; a site with accounts or stored data needs checks beyond its visible interface.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Choose hosting, domain, and code ownership deliberately
Some builders offer hosting as part of their workflow; another route is to export code and deploy it elsewhere. TechRadar describes built-in hosting as convenient and exporting code as a way to gain portability, with more setup work involved. The right choice depends on how much control you want and who will maintain the site.

| Consideration | What to check |
|---|---|
| Setup and operations | Whether the platform handles deployment and ongoing hosting, or you will configure and maintain them. |
| Code portability | Whether you can export the code and use version control with your preferred workflow. |
| Domain | How a custom domain is connected and whether the current plan supports it. |
| Data and integrations | Where site data is stored, which integrations are supported, and what happens if you move providers. |
| Cost and limits | Current plan pricing, usage limits, and domain or export terms, checked directly with the provider. |
| Maintenance | Who will handle updates, access, backups, and fixes after launch. |
There is no single best tool for everyone. Prompt-first hosted builders, visual builders, and AI-assisted code editors can differ in code control, preview and hosting, export options, integrations, setup effort, and ongoing maintenance. Compare those factors against your own skills and needs rather than assuming a provider’s terms or capabilities are standard. Hosting, pricing, domain, and export rules can change. For a domain-connected launch, TechRadar also advises verifying SSL when the chosen host requires it.
8. Publish, monitor, and keep a recovery route
Before launch, use a separate staging environment if your setup supports one, keep version history, and back up important data. Check that you know how to restore a working version; a backup is useful only if it can be recovered. TechRadar’s deployment guidance also recommends protecting secrets and access, testing restoration, and checking logs for errors after publishing.
- Review the final version in the environment intended for launch.
- Connect the domain using the host’s current instructions and verify SSL if required.
- Publish, then check key pages and user journeys on the live site.
- Monitor errors and keep an accessible known-good version or restorable backup.
Staging and backups reduce recovery risk, but neither guarantees that every problem can be prevented.
How to choose a vibe-coding tool
Decide first how much code control you want and whether you need the platform to include preview and hosting. Then verify that it supports your actual forms, content workflow, or payment integration; check export and version-control options; and consider who will maintain the result. Confirm current prices, plan limits, domain rules, and data or export terms with the provider before committing. Available guidance supports a convenience-versus-portability trade-off, but does not establish a neutral feature-by-feature ranking of builders.

A 2026 review by Michels and colleagues reports three distinct findings from different measurement settings: peer-reviewed field experiments reported 26% more tasks per week; independent randomized trials measured a 19% slowdown; and team-level telemetry showed a 441% increase in code-review time. These are not comparable estimates of website-building speed, and none establishes what a beginner should expect from a particular tool. The review is available on arXiv.
